Job Description

JOB TITLE: Sixth Form Learning Mentor

REPORTS TO: Deputy Head of Sixth Form

HOURS: 35 hours per week 8:00am to 3:30pm (Monday to Friday)

Key Purpose of Role:

To work with Sixth Form students supporting them with their learning and maximise their chance of success at post-16 study. To work with the staff responsible for leading the Sixth Form to help them develop students' academic and wider skills. To act as a role model and mentor students, implementing and monitoring strategies to raise aspirations and attainment in students and encourage progression to higher education and beyond. To work with the Sixth Form leadership team to ensure excellent pastoral support. To support students with their future pathway planning for University, Apprenticeships or work.

To support students in their day to day organisation and routines

To supervise the Sixth Form Study Centre

To manage standards and environment of the Sixth Form Centre

To mentor and support individual students or groups of students towards their academic and aspirational goals.

To undertake administrative duties

Duties:

Working with Sixth Form students

  • To encourage the development of academic skills such as time management, independent learning, revision techniques and research skills through individual and group activity. To work with underperforming students under the guidance of the Sixth Form leadership team to help them direct their time and activities
  • To advise students on how to access advice and guidance; to enable them to make informed choices about post-18 education options
  • To contribute to the UCAS quality assurance system to ensure that a high standard of applications are being produced by applicants, including checking draft personal statements and giving appropriate feedback
  • To deliver relevant UCAS support to provide students with the knowledge to confidently navigate and access resources on the UCAS website and applying to university / deliver support for apprenticeship courses
  • To support with, and monitor students’ engagement with all elements of their Northwood Diploma including:
  • Wider reading & intellectual curiosity (in collaboration with teaching and library staff)
  • securing work experience placements and additional enrichment opportunities
  • Community service (inside and/or outside of school)
  • Communicating with tutors, parents and class teachers about students' wellbeing and attendance - communicating all issues arising to the HoS and DHoS.
  • To support students in their day to day organisation and routines
  • Mentor students when directed
  • Co-ordinate the organisation and monitoring of rewards and sanctions in Sixth Form (including office hours, reports and rewards/ privileges)
  • Monitor and liaise with form tutors on school projects such as NWD and other leadership opportunities.

Supervision of the Sixth Form Study Centre

  • To develop good relationships with all students by establishing a positive, professional presence within the Sixth Form and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  • To oversee the running of the supervised Sixth Form study centre. This will involve supporting students with independent study, UCAS applications and wider reading
  • To ensure the sixth form study is a quiet, productive and purposeful environment.

Managing standards and the learning environment of the Sixth Form Study Centre

  • To have and uphold high expectations of how students use and work in the Study Centre in order to maintain a culture of good work ethic and a positive learning environment.
  • To provide support for individual students and small groups of students outside the classroom to enable them to participate fully in learning tasks
  • To assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the Head of Sixth Form and subject teachers
  • To assist in the compilation of UCAS and future pathway applications by students
  • To support students with emotional or behavioural problems and help develop their social skills.
  • To ensure displays in the sixth form centre are relevant and inspiring.
  • Organise and update the displays and maintenance of the Sixth Form centre
  • Help with the planning of Sixth Form events

Mentoring and supporting students towards their academic and aspirational goals

  • To mentor individual students who are underperforming or who need support with their academic work. Building good relationships and providing them with good learning strategies.
  • To mentor and work with individual students who need support with aspirational planning helping them to plan and prepare for University, apprenticeships or work.
  • Work with classroom teachers and parents when supporting individual students to keep them informed about progress.
  • Is open to learning how to manage the Next Steps (careers/ UCAS/ apprenticeship) programme
  • Taking PSHCE and form time sessions as part of the programme
  • Supporting the Next Steps launch evening
  • Signposting and supporting apprenticeship applications
  • Supporting student planning, confirming choices, personal statement writing/CV writing, reference writing
  • Is open to learning how to lead and manage Year 12 work experience, ensuring that students secure meaningful work experience placements

Administrative Support

  • To log and monitor the attendance and punctuality of students whilst they use the study centre. Assist in the monitoring of Sixth Form students attendance and punctuality.
  • Communicate with parents, subject teachers and tutors about individual students, as directed.
  • To log sixth-form related matters on Bromcom.
  • To support the monitoring of sixth form office hours, reminding students to attend.
  • To support the sixth form team with administrative tasks, as directed.
  • To support the planning of sixth form events.
  • Working with Sixth Form team, tutors and teachers to ensure that uniform, behaviour, punctuality and work ethic are high and to support students with required interventions
  • Communicating with the above stakeholders about students' wellbeing and attendance

Other

  • To be familiar with the school’s policies and procedures for safeguarding, health and safety
  • To actively promote the Northwood School and liaise with outside agencies as necessary, representing the school as appropriate.
  • To maintain a presence around the Sixth Form to ensure that the highest standards of behaviour and site usage are upheld.
  • To communicate and liaise with staff, students, parents, governors and members of the local community as appropriate.
  • To be active in issues of staff and student welfare and support.
  • To comply with and assist in the development of policies and procedures in relation to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to Equality of Opportunity for all members of the school’s community.
  • To be actively involved in the school’s extracurricular/enrichment provision.
  • To undertake training and development relevant to the post and in line with the school’s priorities.
  • To undertake any other professional duties as required by the organisation
