Position: Enterprise Data Steward

Location: Calgary, AB

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Enterprise Data Steward (Data Governance / Data Stewardship) to bring structure, ownership, and quality to enterprise data across our operational, planning, and analytical platforms.

This role looks across the whole data landscape, from operational source systems through ETL pipelines to planning, forecasting, and reporting, to find where data breaks, why it breaks, and how to fix it at the source. You will design practical, enterprise-wide governance and turn it into repeatable steps the business actually follows.

You will work closely with Data Engineering, Data Science, Business Intelligence, and business leaders, and you will connect every data issue to its business impact, such as inventory accuracy, forecast quality, service levels, and cost.

What You'll Do

Enterprise Data Landscape & Pipelines

· Map the end-to-end flow of data from source systems (e.g. Right Angle, FRMS, and manually maintained spreadsheets) through pipelines to planning, forecasting, and reporting tools.

· Identify systemic failure points in the data flow and drive fixes at the source rather than downstream workarounds.

· Work with Data Engineering to document data lineage and data movement between source systems, ETL pipelines, and downstream applications.

· Move business-critical data out of manually maintained and secured spreadsheets into controlled, auditable pipelines.

Data Governance & Stewardship

· Design and own the enterprise data governance framework, including standards, policies, roles, decision rights, and escalation paths.

· Define critical data elements, business definitions, and data ownership; identify and coach business data owners.

· Set up and run a cross-functional data governance forum to prioritize issues and agree on standards.

· Build a governance roadmap with measurable outcomes and report progress to senior leadership.

· Maintain data dictionaries, business glossaries, and metadata repositories.

Master Data & Data Quality

· Own entity and alias mapping across systems so each customer, site, location, and product resolves to a single trusted record.

· Build and govern a location master (sites, terminals, delivery points) as the single source of truth, including address and geospatial accuracy.

· Define data quality rules and KPIs covering accuracy, completeness, consistency, validity, timeliness, and uniqueness, and monitor them across platforms.

· Investigate, track, and resolve data quality issues through root cause analysis and corrective action with Data Engineering and business teams.

· Set data-readiness standards for demand forecasting and optimization models, including history completeness, outlier handling, and consistent hierarchies.

Business Partnership & Compliance

· Quantify the business cost of poor data and prioritize remediation by its impact on inventory, forecast accuracy, service, and cost.

· Translate business needs into clear governance rules, definitions, and quality standards.

· Communicate data risks, governance gaps, and remediation progress to business and technical stakeholders, including senior leaders.

· Ensure data practices align with security, privacy, and regulatory requirements, and support audits and compliance reviews.

What You'll Need

Required Qualifications

· 7+ years in data governance, data stewardship, data quality, master data management, or a related data role.

· Experience designing and rolling out a data governance framework or program across multiple systems or business units, not only maintaining an existing one.

· Strong business acumen: able to understand operational and planning processes and link data problems to business outcomes.

· Hands-on master data management experience for customer, location, or product domains, including entity resolution and alias/cross-reference mapping.

· Strong SQL skills for data profiling, reconciliation, validation, and root cause analysis.

· Solid understanding of ETL/data integration, data warehouses, and how data flows from operational systems to analytics.

· Excellent communication skills, with confidence presenting to senior stakeholders and influencing without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

· Background in supply chain, logistics, inventory planning, or downstream energy/fuel distribution.

· Experience with data used by forecasting, optimization, or AI/ML models.

· Familiarity with operational or commodity systems such as Right Angle.

· Experience with geospatial or location data quality.

· Familiarity with cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks) and governance/catalog tools (Collibra, Informatica, Microsoft Purview, Alation).

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
