En tant que membre de l’équipe des opérations des satellites LEO, le contrôleur de satellites LEO assurera la surveillance et le contrôle des satellites et effectuera toutes les activités prévues et imprévues liées à l’exploitation des satellites Lightspeed de Telesat. Le contrôleur de satellites LEO travaille 24 heures sur 24 au Centre des opérations des satellites Lightspeed; il collabore étroitement avec l’ingénieur des opérations de vol pour exploiter les systèmes de contrôle des satellites qui exécutent et surveillent les activités des satellites; il réagit aux anomalies des satellites ou des systèmes et en fait rapport.

Responsabilités principales Effectuer toutes les activités prévues et imprévues liées à l’exploitation des satellites Telesat Lightspeed;

  • Participer à toutes les activités d’exploitation des satellites, prévues et imprévues, liées à l’entretien et au développement de l’équipement de contrôle au sol et des systèmes de contrôle des satellites;
  • Surveiller et analyser les données de télémétrie générées par les satellites afin de détecter toute anomalie et prendre les mesures appropriées au besoin;
  • Préparer, télécharger et surveiller les manœuvres d’orbite et d’attitude conformément aux procédures établies; Assurer la préparation et la planification précises des activités des satellites telles que fournies par d’autres groupes d’exploitation des satellites;
  • Assurer la validation et le signalement des défaillances pour l’ensemble du matériel, des logiciels et de l’équipement de soutien auxiliaire des systèmes de contrôle des satellites.
  • Reconnaître, signaler et déterminer la réponse appropriée à toutes les anomalies des satellites ou au sol en temps opportun, en mettant en œuvre les procédures d’urgence appropriées pour les satellites et d’autres instructions spécifiées.
  • Fournir des rapports détaillés et de la documentation d’appui pour toutes les anomalies des satellites, les défaillances d’équipement, les problèmes logiciels et les pannes de communication.
  • Maintenir un haut niveau de compétence dans l’utilisation des systèmes d’exploitation et des programmes informatiques, ainsi que des programmes informatiques spécialisés conçus sur mesure et des outils d’analyse utilisés au Centre de contrôle des satellites.

Formation et expérience

  • Diplôme de technologue d’au moins trois (3) ans en communications, en électrique ou en génie électronique, ou l’équivalent.
  • La connaissance des systèmes de contrôle des satellites constitue un atout; Une connaissance de base de la conception des sous-systèmes satellitaires et des orbites constitue un atout;
  • Solides compétences en analyse, en résolution de problèmes, en prise de décision en temps réel, en planification et en organisation;
  • Excellentes compétences en communication en anglais, à l’oral et à l’écrit;
  • Connaissance du français à l’oral et à l’écrit est un atout;
  • Autonome et motivé, capable de travailler efficacement tant de façon individuelle qu’en équipe.

Compétences, prise de décision et supervision

  • Grande capacité à suivre les procédures techniques d’exploitation des satellites;
  • Capacité à travailler sans supervision et à diriger une petite équipe;
  • Capacité à travailler en étroite collaboration avec l’ingénieur des opérations de vol;
  • D’excellentes aptitudes interpersonnelles sont essentielles, car le contrôleur de satellites interagit intensivement avec les équipes d’ingénierie des opérations satellitaires ainsi qu’avec d’autres segments du système Lightspeed;
  • Capacité à rester vigilant en tout temps dans un environnement où la conscience situationnelle et l’excellence opérationnelle sont cruciales pour maintenir la santé de la constellation de satellites Lightspeed;
  • Capacité à réagir rapidement et avec précision aux anomalies des satellites; être très attentif à un certain nombre d’alarmes visuelles et sonores.
  • Il est nécessaire de porter une attention constante aux textes imprimés, aux écrans d’ordinateur et aux informations transmises verbalement par les collègues, les gestionnaires et les nombreux experts techniques qui interagissent régulièrement avec le Centre des opérations satellitaires.

Le candidat retenu doit posséder (ou être admissible à obtenir) une autorisation de sécurité CGP. Le lieu de travail se situe à notre Centre principal d’exploitation des satellites (SOC) à Gatineau, ou à notre SOC secondaire à Ottawa, situé à environ 3 km de là. Des primes de quarts de travail sont versées pour couvrir le travail après les heures normales, les fins de semaine et les jours fériés, ainsi que certaines heures supplémentaires, selon la demande.

As a member of the LEO Satellite Operations team, the LEO Satellite Controller will monitor, and control satellites and perform all scheduled and non-scheduled activities associated with the operation of Telesat Lightspeed satellites. The LEO Satellite Controller works around the clock in Lightspeed Satellite Operations Centre; closely with the Flight Operations Engineer Operating the Satellite Control Systems that execute and monitor satellite activities; respond and report satellite or system anomalies.

Main Responsibilities

  • Perform all scheduled and non-scheduled activities associated with the operation of Telesat Lightspeed satellites;
  • Assist with all scheduled and non-scheduled satellite operations activities associated with the maintenance and development of Satellite Ground Control Equipment and Satellite Control Systems;
  • Monitor and analyze satellite generated telemetry data for anomalous satellite conditions and take appropriate action as required;
  • Prepare, upload and monitor orbit and attitude maneuvers in accordance with established procedures;
  • Ensure accurate preparation and scheduling of satellite activities as provided by other Satellite Operations groups;
  • Provide validation and deficiency reporting for all Satellite Control system hardware, software and ancillary support equipment.
  • Recognize report and determine the correct response to all satellite or ground discrepancies in a timely manner by instituting appropriate satellite emergency procedures and other specified instructions.
  • Provide detailed reports and support documentation for all satellite discrepancies, equipment malfunctions, software issues and communications outages.
  • Maintain high proficiency in the use of computer operating systems and programs and special use custom designed computer programs and analysis tools utilized in the Satellite Control Centre.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3-year technologist diploma in Communications, Electrical, or Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of satellite control systems is an asset;
  • Basic knowledge of satellite subsystems design and orbits is an asset;
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, real-time decision-making, planning and organizational skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written English communications skills;
  • Verbal and written French communications skills is an asset;
  • Independent and self-motivated, with the ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment.

Skills, Decision Making and Supervision

  • Strong ability to follow technical satellite operations procedures;
  • Ability to work unsupervised and lead a small team;
  • Ability to work closely with Flight Operations Engineer;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as the Satellite Controller interfaces extensively with Satellite Operations engineering teams as well as other Lightspeed system segments;
  • The ability to remain alert at all hours in an environment where situational awareness and excellence in operations are critical to maintaining the health of the Lightspeed satellite constellation;
  • Ability to quickly and accurately respond to satellite anomalies; be keenly aware of a number of visual and audio alarms.
  • There is a continuous requirement to give close attention to printed text, computer screens and information given verbally by co-workers, managers and numerous technical experts who interface with the Satellite Operations Centre on an ongoing basis.
  • Well-developed time management skills in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Disciplined ability to continuously learn through self-study and OJT
  • Proficiency in use of software tools with programming/development skills considered an asset
  • Successful candidate must possess (or be eligible to obtain) a CGP security clearance. Working environment is at our
  • Primary Satellite Operations Centre (SOC) in Gatineau, or at our Secondary SOC in Ottawa ~3 kms away.
  • Shift premiums are paid to cover after hours work, weekends and holidays with some overtime; depending on demand.
