The posting

Are you looking for a Challenge? Looking for an innovative organization and the opportunity to learn and grow professionally? We can help! We are seeking a Primary Instructor to support Army University’s Army Strategic Education Program – Transition Course (ASEP-T), an executive career-transition program for retiring and separating U.S. Army General Officers and their spouses. This is a Key Personnel position. Courses are delivered in person in the National Capital Region (historically the AUSA Conference and Events Center in Arlington, VA) and online, with five (5) five-day courses per year, one (1) Introductory Transition Module, and up to eight (8) Four-Star Executive Sessions annually.

I’ve never heard of Terrestris. What do you do?

At Terrestris, we leverage technology to create better mission outcomes through better human performance. We form strong client and team relationships through transparency and strive to create an environment where our team can let their excellence shine through. By finding, developing, and incorporating new ideas, we provide memorable services. Rooted in the USMC values of honor, courage, and commitment, Terrestris seeks to deliver extraordinary value to the American people by helping the Government become more efficient and effective.

So, what will the Primary Instructor at Terrestris do?

The Primary Instructor serves as the lead instructor for ASEP-T, a five-day executive education course that prepares transitioning General Officers and their spouses to move from senior military leadership into the civilian workforce in accordance with the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act, Transition Assistance Program (TAP), and Soldier for Life requirements. Using executive adult learning models and challenging experiential exercises rather than lecture, the Primary Instructor teaches, presents, or facilitates the majority of the curriculum, including pre-separation counseling, individual transition planning, resumes, networking, personal branding, interviewing, salary negotiation, and employment assistance.

Working alongside the Alternate Instructor and in coordination with the ASEP-T Course Director, the Primary Instructor also provides individual counseling to each participant, delivers customized transition sessions for retiring four-star generals, and drives continuous curriculum improvement through pre-course surveys, course evaluations, after action reviews, and longitudinal follow-up with course graduates.

What does a typical day look like for a Primary Instructor?

You will:

  • Serve as lead instructor for five (5) five-day ASEP-T courses per year (approximately eight hours per day) for up to 18 General Officers in person or 22 online, plus their spouses.
  • Develop and maintain a current, modular curriculum adaptable to face-to-face and online delivery (e.g., Zoom, Teams) that meets VOW Act, TAP, Soldier for Life, and Department of Labor requirements.
  • Present a five-to-ten-year vision of the executive landscape that helps General Officers determine where they best fit as executive leaders.
  • Guide participants in building individual transition plans, including pre-separation timelines, realistic career goals, interest/aptitude assessments, and translation of military experience into civilian terms.
  • Instruct on resumes/CVs and cover letters, networking plans, LinkedIn and social media, job search methods, personal branding, interviewing, civilian salary scales and negotiation, public and non-profit opportunities, and legal and ethical constraints unique to retiring General Officers.
  • Facilitate experiential exercises, including internet- and AI-enabled exercises, resume building, mock interviews, and mock offer negotiations.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions with each participant (and spouse, as applicable), including in-depth resume critiques, transition plan feedback, strengths assessments, and networking plan reviews.
  • Help design and deliver an integrated spouse curriculum with spouse-specific break-out sessions.
  • Coordinate a Day 2 no-host networking event featuring at least three (3) recently retired General Officers.
  • Deliver the annual one-day Introductory Transition Module (ITM) for up to 200 students at the Senior Leader Development Seminar (SLDS).
  • Deliver up to eight (8) customized four-hour Four-Star Executive Sessions per year, in person or virtually, covering civilian role translation, corporate boards, LLC formation, and compensation negotiation.
  • Provide up to two (2) hours of follow-on coaching per participant for up to 90 days after retirement.
  • Develop pre-course surveys, high-performance assessments, course evaluations, and course outlines; participate in after action reviews and contribute to post-course, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Coordinate guest speakers on topics such as VA benefits, ethics, and financial and estate planning (retirement pay, TSP, SBP, Post-9/11 GI Bill, VA disability, and Social Security).

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we’re looking for if you have:

  • Authorization to permanently work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Ability to pass background checks (NCIC-III and Terrorist Screening Database) for Army installation and facility access. No security clearance is required.
  • A PhD in Business Administration, Human Performance Measurement and Evaluation, Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, Counseling, Management, or a related field; or status as a retired U.S. Army General Officer with a master’s degree in one of those fields.
  • Honorable U.S. Army service at the General/Flag Officer level completed within the last 15 years, including at least ten (10) years of active-duty service at the rank of O-4 or above completed within the last 20 years.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience as a senior executive in a publicly or privately held corporation, or as a senior executive inside government.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience providing executive transition counseling, or serving as an executive career services officer or executive career counselor/coach.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience working directly with U.S. Army General Officers and senior executives in a publicly or privately held corporation.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience counseling U.S. Army General Officers and senior corporate executives on out-placement services.
  • Experience within the last three (3) years developing professional transition plans, development plans, and executive course curricula or training plans for General Officers.
  • Demonstrated delivery of Executive Transition curriculum in an online/virtual format within the last twelve (12) months.
  • A current Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) certification or other related professional certification.
  • Ability to travel within CONUS, including to the National Capital Region for in-person courses.

We are extra impressed by folks with:

  • Prior experience instructing ASEP-T, TAP, or other senior-leader career transition programs.
  • Executive coaching credentials (e.g., ICF ACC/PCC/MCC) or SHRM-SCP in addition to PHR/SPHR.
  • Corporate or non-profit board service, or experience advising executives on board placement and LLC formation.
  • Experience designing spouse and family transition programming.
  • Working knowledge of retirement pay, TSP, SBP, VA disability, and Social Security as they affect senior officers.
  • Fluency with AI-enabled job search tools, LinkedIn, and executive personal branding.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
