The posting

The Atlantic is hiring a Designer to join our Consumer Strategy & Growth creative team in New York. You’ll design digital marketing campaigns across paid social, email, and onsite that engage readers, convert prospective subscribers, and deepen relationships with existing customers, all while upholding the quality of The Atlantic brand.

Since 1857, The Atlantic has been a home for some of America’s best writers and boldest thinkers, from Ralph Waldo Emerson and Frederick Douglass to James Baldwin and Sylvia Plath. We’re looking for a designer who shares our passion for journalism and our mission.

Candidates should be skilled in design thinking such as color, composition, typography, and visual hierarchy. They should also be self-starting, curious, and data-informed. Often working within a design system, you should know when to apply established design patterns and styles, as well as when to evolve them.

We are seeking a designer who is equally invested in craft and performance—someone who can translate the wit and sophistication of The Atlantic into high performing campaigns. You will design across a range of channels, partnering with copywriters and senior creative leaders to develop ideas that are smart, distinctive, and effective. Working closely with growth marketers and analysts, you will use audience insights and creative test results to inform and refine your creative approach. This position is ideal for a designer with a graphic design background who wants to deepen both their creative and strategic skills while helping bring vital journalism to millions of readers around the world.

If you are searching for a job with purpose, this is it.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce digital and print assets for subscription marketing campaigns, including paid social (Facebook, Instagram, Reddit), email design, onsite and display ads, print materials, and more
  • Use data and insights to make strategic design decisions for campaigns and assets targeted broadly to prospects, actives, and expired/canceled subscribers and more granularly to smaller specific audiences
  • Design variations for A/B tests and creative tests, then work with growth marketers and analysts to read the results and refine future campaigns
  • Collaborate with copywriters to conceptualize, present, and produce creative directions that unite copy and design across digital marketing channels
  • Inspire confidence and enthusiasm in stakeholders by articulating your design thinking and connecting your decisions to strategic goals and audience insights
  • Act as your own project manager: organize your tasks across multiple projects; keep track of deadlines; create and maintain documentation

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years professional experience.
  • Background in advertising, marketing, agency, design studio, or subscription-based company is preferred.
  • Strong visual design skills with attention to detail and understanding of design principles, layout, typography, grid, and color
  • Strong conceptual thinker who enjoys exploring storytelling and visual metaphor
  • Fluency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects) and Figma
  • Motion graphics abilities are preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills: can brainstorm with a group, articulate and present ideas, and clarify feedback from colleagues
  • Openness to feedback and the ability to apply it to future work
  • A finger on the pulse of marketing and media trends, along with art, culture, and the zeitgeist
  • Passion for the future of high-quality, independent journalism

Candidates must apply with a link to an online portfolio or design samples. Applicants without samples will not be considered.

Salary minimum: $77,000; Salary maximum: $87,000

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
