The posting

The Atlantic is looking for an innovative, analytical, and curious Senior Engineer to join our Monetization & Growth team. We aim to support a more thoughtful American public by powering and expanding our Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism. Guided by our readers and informed by data, you will build products and systems that amplify our impact and reach. We pride ourselves on maintaining an inclusive and diverse culture that values continuous learning, elegant problem solving, supportive teamwork, and delivering value.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience, including substantial experience building and evolving production web products
  • Experience working with advertising systems, monetization integrations, and/or ad-supported digital products
  • Experience building and debugging user-facing product experiences in close partnership with product and design
  • Experience owning technical work in production, including troubleshooting, operational responsibility, and sound engineering judgment
  • Understanding of how third-party integrations, performance, and product decisions can affect advertising or revenue outcomes
  • Ability to work through ambiguity, break complex problems into technical plans, and drive execution with appropriate stakeholder communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modern web application architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and deployment workflows
  • Familiarity with direct-sold and programmatic advertising workflows, audience activation, or third-party monetization vendors
  • Experience improving performance for ad-supported experiences, including latency, rendering behavior, layout stability, and core web vitals
  • Strong frontend judgment around responsive layouts, embedded third-party experiences, and debugging placement or creative-sizing issues
  • Experience supporting product experiences across both web and app surfaces
  • Familiarity with audience data, targeting, experimentation, consent, or measurement systems
  • 2+ years in a technical leadership role, whether through leading projects, mentoring engineers, or shaping architectural decisions
  • Background in media, publishing, subscriptions, or other consumer product environments with meaningful third-party integrations and data flows

As a Senior Engineer at The Atlantic, you will

  • Write, test, debug, document, deploy, and maintain code across our full stack
  • Build and improve systems that support monetization, advertising, and reader-facing product experiences
  • Partner with Product and Design to turn ambiguous requirements into well-scoped technical solutions
  • Work closely with the Mobile Engineering team on app monetization efforts while remaining anchored on Monetization & Growth priorities
  • Help evaluate, integrate, and improve third-party platforms and vendors that support advertising, targeting, experimentation, and monetization
  • Improve ad-supported product experiences with a focus on performance, reliability, layout stability, and reader experience
  • Participate in and contribute to code reviews, sprint planning, technical documentation, and broader engineering collaboration
  • Participate in an on-call rotation outside standard business hours to monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues
  • Research and recommend technical approaches for future product and platform improvements, presenting tradeoffs clearly
  • Demonstrate technical leadership by mentoring engineers, establishing best practices, and helping maintain a high bar for quality across the engineering organization
  • Balance revenue impact, implementation complexity, system health, and user experience when making technical decisions
  • Work effectively across product, data, revenue, legal, and vendor stakeholders on business-critical systems with real operational dependencies
  • The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.

As an Atlantic Engineer, you are

  • A talented programmer: you are proficient in modern full-stack web development and write clean, maintainable code
  • Knowledgeable: you work effectively within established architectures and follow industry best practices around security, accessibility, and performance
  • Flexible: you are curious, adaptable, and open to new tools and approaches when they genuinely solve a problem
  • A strong communicator: you communicate clearly and proactively with both technical and non-technical partners
  • A pragmatic technologist: you gravitate toward the simplest viable solution that balances current and near-term needs
  • A critical thinker: you can take a product requirement, identify risks and dependencies, and move from ambiguity to execution
  • A team player: you support your teammates, share knowledge freely, and help strengthen the broader engineering culture
  • Mission-aligned: you recognize the value of journalism and want to help great reporting reach and serve more people

Salary minimum: $125,000; Salary maximum: $150,000

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
