Description

The Business of Fashion is seeking a ​​correspondent to expand our coverage of the retail sector, from the latest in retail M&A and earnings to exploring the trends driving success at stores today. The ideal candidate will join BoF's newsroom already possessing strong sourcing, reporting and writing skills to break news, analyse the latest developments and create differentiating, data-driven insights in this critical beat. Based in New York with opportunities for travel, the correspondent will report to BoF’s US editor.

Who you are:

Part business reporter, part fashion reporter, part trend reporter, the candidate should be able to evaluate and analyse the retail sector, from the . As well, they should aspire to:

  • Have an instinct for which retailers and retail leaders are pushing the industry forward.
  • Unpack the latest developments in retail — think Reformation’s IPO, Saks’ bankruptcy and Victoria’s Secret’s turnaround
  • Identify consumer trends and analyse them from a business perspective, from brands launching handbags to the explosion of neighbourhood retail.
  • Have a deep knowledge of the fashion industry, from the top-tier luxury houses to emerging designers and mass-market brands, as well as retail real estate, new commerce channels and supply chain technologies.
  • Can react to news quickly, both in writing short news hits and second-day analysis
  • Understand and be able to synthesise earnings reports, S1s, income statements, etc.
  • Already has a list of contacts and sources in the retail space and is capable of breaking news
  • Someone who works hard, is excited to tell stories and has a can-do attitude

What We Need You To Do:

  • Pitch and deliver at least 1 freshly reported feature on your beat per week
  • Regularly write brief news stories that are important for BoF readers while also quickly developing the most vital of these stories into analysis and trend pieces.
  • Use your source network and industry expertise to break news and elevate features.
  • Develop relationships with top-level executives in fashion and retail.
  • Contribute to BoF’s longer form content, including case studies.
  • Collaborate on stories and projects with reporters and editors on adjacent beats, including luxury, tech and marketing based in our newsroom hubs in London and New York.
