The posting

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Globe and Mail is looking for an experienced reporter to cover business in Western Canada, based in British Columbia.   British Columbia hosts a wide variety of vibrant industries, including energy, mining, forestry, agriculture, seafood, technology and tourism. We’re seeking a reporter who can find news and feature opportunities of national interest in these sectors and others and bring stories to life with strong reporting and writing. The reporter will also work closely with others on the energy team to cover news and issues in Alberta, the heart of Canada’s oil and gas industry.   The successful candidate will have experience covering business and a good understanding of corporate news and commodity markets, along with a proven ability to develop a strong network of sources and break news. You will be expected to regularly write a variety of stories on deadline with authority and context. The reporter will work collaboratively with Globe reporters and editors to ensure The Globe is ahead of other media for news, analysis and features concerning the most pressing developments and issues in Western Canada’s business scene.   RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Cover breaking business news, issues and trends in British Columbia and Alberta.   Frequently pitch fresh, compelling story ideas  Develop and maintain sources in business and government, including key players in the energy industry, to deliver exclusive news and insight  Write clearly and concisely on deadline  Work with colleagues across Report on Business and wider newsroom to generate story ideas and enrich The Globe’s coverage  Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

At least five years experience as a reporter in a daily news organization   Solid news judgment with a track record of enterprise work  Ability to cultivate sources to break news and get inside key issues Familiarity with political reporting and economics  Strong writing with versatile range - from hard news to human-interest feature to explanatory    Comfortable working in a variety of formats, including live blogs, newsletters, video and audio 

This position is based in the Vancouver office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
