The Henry Ford has a proud tradition of volunteer service. Our formal Volunteer Program began in 1978 with just 16 volunteers and has continued to grow and evolve alongside the institution. Today, in 2026, 300+ volunteers support more then 25+ departments across The Henry Ford, contributing their time, talents, skills, and passion to help advance our mission and create meaningful experiences for our guests and community. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles across the organization, from engaging with guests, supporting educational programs, special events, behind-the-scenes departments and assisting with administrative and clerical work. Placements are thoughtfully matched based on organizational needs, individual interests and skills, availability, and the requirements of each volunteer opportunity. Vol Volunteer Opportunities: Assignments may be available in the following areas:
Museum and Greenfield Village building locations Special programming and events Educational programs Administrative and office support Behind-the-scenes projects Other areas based on organizational needs
Role Responsibilities: Depending on the assignment, volunteers may:
Create welcoming and positive experiences for guests Assist with programs, events, activities, or special projects Support educational experiences involving children, students, and families Help prepare materials, resources, or spaces for programs and events Provide administrative or behind-the-scenes support Learn, present and share approved information related to their assigned area Work independently or collaboratively with staff and other volunteers Follow established procedures, safety expectations, and staff direction Represent The Henry Ford and its values in a respectful and professional manner
Qualifications: Previous volunteer or professional experience is welcomed but may not be required for every assignment
Dependability and commitment to an agreed-upon schedule Strong communication and interpersonal skills An interest in learning and supporting The Henry Ford’s mission The ability to follow instructions and established procedures Comfort working independently, with a team, or with the public, depending on placement Willingness to complete required orientation and assignment-specific training Ability to use Microsoft Outlook and a THF-issued email account for scheduling, updates, and emergency communications
Availability:
Availability may include weekdays and weekends Opportunities may be available during morning, afternoon, and evening hours (special programming hours) Availability for special programs and events may be needed depending on the volunteer assignment Specific scheduling needs will vary based on the volunteer location, manager and program needs
Volunteer Placement:
Volunteer placements are determined by current organizational needs, assignment requirements, and the applicant’s interests, availability, experience, and skills
Physical Requirements/Environment:
Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time, depending on the volunteer assignment Ability to work indoors and/or outdoors, depending on the volunteer assignment Ability to move between locations as required by the volunteer assignment Ability to work in busy or crowded environments Ability to interact with guests, staff, children, students, families, and other volunteers, as applicable to the assignment Some assignments may involve lifting or carrying materials appropriate to the volunteer activity Physical requirements and work environments will vary by assignment Applicants may share relevant accessibility considerations to assist in identifying an appropriate and safe volunteer placement
