The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Public Health has an exciting opportunity for a full time Data Analyst 3 to work in Miami, FL.

The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami has an opportunity for a Data Analyst 3 to serve as a senior research data systems specialist supporting complex, longitudinal, multi-site, and multi-arm epidemiologic and clinical research studies. The position will support state-, federally-, and institutionally funded research programs, including large-scale occupational and environmental health studies involving firefighters and other first responder populations. The Data Analyst 3 will serve as a subject matter expert in REDCap and related research data technologies and will work closely with principal investigators, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, research coordinators, project managers, and other research personnel to design, develop, implement, and maintain sophisticated electronic data capture and research data management systems.

The position requires advanced expertise in REDCap, including longitudinal project architecture, repeated instruments and events, automated workflows, complex branching and calculated fields, survey administration, data quality procedures, user rights and security, application programming interfaces, and integration with external data sources and analytic systems. The incumbent will also have substantial experience with MyCap and the REDCap Mobile App and will support participant-facing and field-based mobile data collection. The Data Analyst 3 will use R and/or Python to develop reproducible data processing workflows, automate data extraction and transformation, interface with REDCap APIs, conduct data quality assessments, prepare complex longitudinal analytic datasets, and support research analyses and reporting. This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, with remote work combined with periodic on-site meetings, project planning, training, and collaborative activities as required.

Core Job Functions:

  • Performs advanced data analysis using various techniques, e.g. statistical analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, data mining.
  • Determines best practices and develops actionable insights and recommendations for the current business operations or issues.
  • Performs ad-hoc analyses and reporting, to aid management in the decision-making process. Builds dashboards or reporting systems for end users, and designs predictive modeling or other data mining capabilities.
  • Designs and develops complex databases and dashboards data to optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
  • Provides advanced business data interpretation, such as identifying trends or patterns of complex data sets. May handle special analytical projects as needed.
  • Provides support and training to applicable staff regarding data management and use.
  • Locate and define new process improvement opportunities; proactively identify opportunities to enhance data collection, quality and accessibility.
  • Develops and implements systems to capture business operation information.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and advises less experienced analysts.

Department Specific Functions:

  • Serves as the principal REDCap subject matter expert for assigned research programs and provides advanced technical consultation regarding REDCap architecture, functionality, data management, and research workflows.
  • Designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains complex REDCap projects supporting longitudinal, multi-arm, multi-site, repeated-measures, observational, and interventional research studies.
  • Develops sophisticated longitudinal REDCap structures, including arms, events, repeated instruments, repeating events, participant schedules, automated survey invitations, alerts and notifications, calculated fields, branching logic, action tags, and complex participant follow-up workflows.
  • Develops and maintains REDCap application programming interface integrations and automated workflows for secure exchange of data between REDCap and external research, analytic, laboratory, biospecimen, administrative, or other authorized systems.
  • Uses R and/or Python to interact programmatically with REDCap APIs, automate data extraction and transformation, perform data validation and quality-control procedures, create reproducible data pipelines, and prepare research datasets for statistical analysis.
  • Develops and supports MyCap projects for participant-facing longitudinal data collection, including configuration of participant tasks, questionnaires, scheduled assessments, notifications, and data synchronization with REDCap.
  • Develops and supports REDCap Mobile App workflows for field-based and offline research data collection and assists research teams with deployment, synchronization, quality assurance, and troubleshooting.
  • Designs electronic case report forms, questionnaires, surveys, participant tracking systems, screening tools, recruitment databases, retention systems, and other electronic research instruments.
  • Develops and maintains data dictionaries, metadata, codebooks, standard operating procedures, technical documentation, system specifications, and data-management documentation for research studies.
  • Conducts advanced quality assurance and quality-control activities to identify missing, inconsistent, duplicate, implausible, or otherwise problematic research data and develops automated or semi-automated procedures for detecting and resolving data-quality issues.
  • Develops reproducible data-management workflows for longitudinal research datasets involving multiple study visits, repeated measures, study arms, participant groups, data sources, and follow-up periods.
  • Integrates data from multiple research sources, which may include REDCap, MyCap, mobile applications, wearable devices, environmental monitoring instruments, laboratory systems, biospecimen repositories, administrative datasets, and external research databases.
  • Designs and maintains automated data pipelines to support secure and efficient transfer, transformation, harmonization, and preparation of research data.
  • Prepares analysis-ready datasets and works collaboratively with investigators and biostatisticians to define variables, derive analytic measures, establish longitudinal data structures, and document data transformations.
  • Conducts statistical programming and exploratory, descriptive, and other analyses using R and/or Python, as appropriate to project needs.
  • Develops dashboards, automated reports, recruitment and retention reports, data-quality reports, study monitoring tools, and other decision-support products for investigators and research teams.
  • Supports data harmonization across multiple studies and develops standardized variables, naming conventions, coding practices, and reusable data structures when appropriate.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate REDCap user roles, data access groups, permissions, authentication procedures, and data-security configurations consistent with institutional and study requirements.
  • Ensures research data systems and workflows are developed and maintained in accordance with approved protocols, IRB requirements, HIPAA requirements when applicable, data-use agreements, institutional policies, and human-subjects research protections.
  • Provides advanced REDCap, MyCap, mobile data collection, API, and research data-management training and technical support to investigators, coordinators, analysts, students, and other research personnel.
  • Troubleshoots complex REDCap, MyCap, API, mobile application, and data-management issues and works with institutional REDCap administrators and other information technology personnel when escalation is required.
  • Evaluates emerging REDCap functionality, external modules, APIs, research data technologies, and analytic tools and recommends solutions that improve data quality, efficiency, scalability, and reproducibility.
  • Develops reusable programming functions, scripts, templates, and automated workflows to standardize research data-management activities across studies.
  • Participates in study planning and protocol development by advising research teams regarding data architecture, electronic data capture, participant-facing technology, study workflows, data integration, and analytic feasibility.
  • Supports preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, grant applications, progress reports, and other scholarly products through data management, analysis, visualization, and interpretation.
  • Advises and mentors research staff and less experienced analysts regarding REDCap development, research data management, programming, and data-quality best practices.
  • Maintains appropriate technical documentation and version-controlled programming code to promote reproducibility, continuity, and transparency of research data workflows.
  • Performs other data analysis, programming, research informatics, and research data-management duties as assigned.

Core Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, information systems, biostatistics, bioinformatics, public health, epidemiology, health informatics, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Preferred: Master's degree in data science, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, health informatics, computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in research data management, data analysis, research informatics, clinical or epidemiologic research, database development, or related work required.
  • Extensive experience designing, developing, and maintaining REDCap projects for complex research studies.
  • Advanced experience with longitudinal REDCap projects, multiple arms, repeated events and instruments, automated survey invitations, alerts, branching logic, calculations, action tags, participant tracking, and complex study workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and using the REDCap API.
  • Demonstrated experience programming automated REDCap data extraction, transformation, validation, or integration workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience with R and/or Python for data management, programming, automation, analysis, or research computing.
  • Demonstrated experience with MyCap, including configuration and deployment of participant-facing longitudinal research activities.
  • Demonstrated experience with the REDCap Mobile App, including field deployment, offline data collection, synchronization, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing complex longitudinal research datasets and preparing analysis-ready datasets.
  • Experience supporting research involving multiple study arms, time points, sites, populations, and/or data sources.

  • Advanced knowledge of MyCap and REDCap Mobile App implementation and support.
  • Strong programming skills in R and/or Python.
  • Ability to develop and troubleshoot RESTful API-based workflows, including REDCap API integrations.
  • Strong understanding of research data structures, relational data concepts, metadata, data dictionaries, and data-management principles.
  • Ability to translate complex research protocols into efficient, scalable, and maintainable electronic data-capture systems.
  • Ability to manage and integrate complex data from multiple sources, study visits, participant groups, and research projects.
  • Knowledge of reproducible data-management and programming practices.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience using both R and Python.
  • Experience integrating REDCap with external systems through APIs.

  • Experience with Git or other version-control systems.
  • Experience integrating data from wearable devices, sensors, environmental monitoring instruments, laboratory systems, biospecimen tracking systems, or mobile applications.
  • Experience supporting large longitudinal cohort studies, multi-site studies, clinical studies, or complex epidemiologic research.
  • Experience with relational data structures, SQL, or database-query languages.
  • Experience developing dashboards or data visualizations using R, Python, Tableau, Power BI, REDCap, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience working within an academic medical center or university-based research environment.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, human-subjects research protections, IRB requirements, data security, and research data governance.
