The Well desk is seeking a Deputy Editor to join its core leadership team to oversee editorial operations, including day-to-day scheduling, long-term planning and managing editors and reporters.

As our Deputy Editor, you will help the desk to pursue ambitious targets, set priorities, and home in on a consistent voice and mission. You'll push Well editors and reporters to collaborate internally and with the newsroom, and help guide inter-desk collaboration. You will do first edits on stories and top-read our report. You will also serve as the desk deputy and can run all aspects of the desk as a proxy for the Editor of Well, when necessary.

You will report to the Well desk's Editor. This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the editorial workflow, including story presentation and promotion. Monitor the status of articles, photography, video and design, as well as display and social copy and any multimedia elements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Well's desk head and the Well Visuals Team.
  • In partnership with the desk head, lead and shape coverage for the desk; make publishing decisions and take ownership of what is published; set the editorial calendar, make sure that all editorial content is on track, and make adjustments when necessary.
  • In partnership with the desk head, support team development, culture and morale; accountable for success and development of direct reports and their respective teams.
  • In partnership with the desk head, shape and drive desk strategy; identify opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
  • Help the desk head to set audience goals and drive the team toward success. Collaborate closely with the desk audience editor.
  • Serve as a hiring manager and ensure that hiring decisions follow fair and equitable practices.
  • Manage a team of editors and reporters.
  • Run the desk's public representation and communications within the greater news organization, with a particular emphasis on helping us play in the big stories of the day Clearly communicate the desk's plans to other desks and stakeholders.
  • Lead the effort in defining editorial franchises and lanes of coverage.
  • Work closely with Well's operations manager on budget, payroll, freelance contracts and vacation scheduling.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience as an editor, ideally with experience across many forms of storytelling, from news to investigations, features and visual projects.
  • Experience with framing and elevating stories for the broadest possible audience.
  • Experience with brainstorming ideas and coaching reporters, editors and the visual team so they produce their best work.
  • Proven experience directly managing editors and reporters in a high-speed news environment.
  • Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and an eagerness to coach and support colleagues.
  • A passion for innovative storytelling and a desire to deploy new formats.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • A collaborative, enthusiastic team spirit and a desire to ask deep, tough questions about health and wellness.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep experience editing health and wellness journalism.
  • A deep understanding of video, visual, and audio storytelling.
  • A track record of fostering agility and successfully implementing new operational workflows.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$190,000—$210,000 USD
