Job Description

Location: Hyderabad, India Division: Analytical Instruments Group, Materials & Structural Analysis Division Organization: Semiconductor R&D

About the team

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Materials and Structural Analysis Semiconductor R&D organization brings together around 400 engineers developing electron microscopy solutions and applications. Our global teams in Eindhoven, Brno, Hillsboro, Hyderabad, and Bordeaux combine expertise in hardware, software, and scientific applications to help customers make the world cleaner, healthier, and safer.

Within this organization, the Cortex value stream develops software for semiconductor data workflows, including tools to organize, explore, and visualize microscopy data. We’re looking for a Backend Technical Lead to own Cortex backend architecture, services, and data integration, and help the team deliver secure, scalable, and reliable software.

How will you make an impact?

You’ll provide hands-on technical leadership for Cortex backend services and integrations. You’ll guide design decisions, API contracts, and service development across the Cortex ecosystem, working closely with the Frontend Technical Lead, DevOps, architects, product owners, and partner teams.

Your ownership will span Cortex backend services, the Cortex Semi Gateway, Process Explorer and File & Recipe backends, Central Cortex, and Contributor backend integration. You’ll help ensure that data and services work reliably across system boundaries, and that backend solutions are ready to operate and evolve in production.

What will you do?

  • Own and guide the architecture and technical direction of Cortex backend services.
  • Lead design and development for the Cortex Semi Gateway, Process Explorer backend, File & Recipe backend, and Central Cortex capabilities.
  • Define and maintain API contracts, versioning approaches, and integration patterns across Cortex services and applications.
  • Design and develop REST APIs and microservices using C#, .NET, and ASP.NET Core.
  • Guide data integration and persistence across SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and other appropriate data stores.
  • Design service communication and messaging patterns, including event-driven approaches where they fit the product needs.
  • Lead integrations with Athena and DAP, and support backend integration for Contributor applications.
  • Work closely with the Frontend Technical Lead on API design, data contracts, and end-to-end user workflows.
  • Partner with DevOps to build, deploy, and operate containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Promote automated testing, code quality, maintainability, and reliable CI/CD practices.
  • Diagnose complex defects and production issues, lead root-cause investigations, and drive fixes that address underlying causes.
  • Improve service scalability, performance, resilience, and observability as product needs evolve.
  • Participate in architecture and design reviews, making pragmatic decisions that balance product needs, technical quality, and delivery.
  • Mentor engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Influence technical direction across teams, manage stakeholder relationships, and communicate decisions and trade-offs clearly.
  • Regularly reflect with the team on how to improve collaboration, service quality, and delivery.

You’ll work with a distributed Agile Scrum team alongside colleagues in Bordeaux, Hillsboro, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The role is based in Hyderabad and reports to the Functional Group Lead.

How will you get here?

Education

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Required experience and skills

  • Significant professional experience developing backend software, with technical leadership or ownership of services and architecture.
  • Expert-level experience with C#, .NET, and ASP.NET Core.
  • Strong experience designing microservices, REST APIs, and distributed systems.
  • Experience with SQL and data stores such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB.
  • Strong understanding of API contracts, versioning, and service integration.
  • Experience with messaging or event-driven architecture.
  • Experience integrating libraries and external or shared services.
  • Experience building and deploying containerized applications with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with automated testing and practices that support reliable service delivery.
  • Strong root-cause analysis and problem-solving skills, including a production-focused approach to software quality.
  • Ability to influence without authority, make pragmatic technical decisions, and collaborate closely with frontend, DevOps, and partner teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Preferred experience

  • Elasticsearch or other search technologies.
  • RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar messaging platforms.
  • Authentication and authorization.
  • Performance engineering, observability, or large-scale data systems.
  • Experience with enterprise integrations such as Athena or DAP.
  • Familiarity with scientific software, imaging, data-intensive applications, or semiconductor workflows.
  • Experience working in a global, cross-functional Agile organization.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
