Job Description

Lead the front-end engineering direction for Reuters’ content platform as we modernize and scale the products that reach billions of people every day. You will set architectural direction, unblock the team on complex problems, and drive a shift-left quality culture in partnership with Quality Engineering. This is a senior technical leadership role with real influence over how one of the world’s most trusted news organizations builds for its professional audience.

Reuters employs over 2,700 journalists across nearly 200 locations and delivers real-time text, images, and video in more than 20 languages. You will work within the front-end engineering team on Reuters.com and its mobile apps, bridging technical and business requirements across product, design, and engineering, and representing front-end engineering to cross-functional stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own architectural decisions for the front-end platform, balancing user experience, performance, and complexity, and communicate tradeoffs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Lead solution design reviews for new and existing features, and drive engineering standards and best practices across the team.
  • Mentor senior and junior engineers, and unblock the team on complex technical problems across the front-end codebase.
  • Partner with Quality Engineering to embed automated testing earlier in the development lifecycle, making testability a first-class consideration in design and code review.
  • Build automated quality gates into the CI/CD pipeline so regressions are caught before they reach production.
  • Root-cause and resolve production issues affecting the front-end platform, and participate in a DevOps on-call rotation.
  • Evaluate and adopt AI-assisted development tools for code generation, code review, and test generation to improve team velocity and code quality.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience

  • 10+ years building highly scalable, customer-facing front-end applications, including experience leading engineering teams

Technical skills

  • TypeScript and modern JavaScript — Advanced
  • React — Expert
  • HTML5/CSS3 — Expert
  • RESTful APIs — Advanced
  • AWS — Intermediate to Advanced

  • Automated testing frameworks: Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright
  • Performance optimization and security best practices

Core competencies

  • Technical leadership and mentorship: guiding senior and junior engineers and setting standards the team adopts
  • Quality ownership: championing shift-left testing and automated quality gates alongside Quality Engineering
  • Stakeholder communication: presenting technical solutions and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Independent judgment under ambiguity: making sound architectural decisions with incomplete information
  • Production problem-solving: root-causing issues quickly and reducing technical debt over time

Preferred Qualifications

Additional experience and technical skills

  • Next.js or other SSR/SSG frameworks
  • GraphQL
  • Microfrontends architecture
  • Familiarity with the team’s broader stack: AngularJS and Tailwind (front end); Java with Spring Boot and TypeScript with AWS Lambda (back end); MongoDB and Amazon Aurora (data); AWS, including AWS Elemental Services (cloud)

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
