Job Description

Are you a legal professional with AI fluency and technology curiosity who wants to build AI-powered solutions that help legal professionals work smarter and deliver better outcomes? Join Thomson Reuters and help shape the future of legal technology on the Legal Products Forward Deployed Engineering team.

As a Senior Legal Engineer, you will work directly with legal customers and cross-functional teams to design, build, and improve AI-powered workflows and tools for legal practice. You will combine deep legal expertise with AI and technology fluency to turn real-world customer needs into practical, high-impact legal AI solutions.

This is a hybrid role available in Frisco, TX; Toronto, ON; Minneapolis–Saint Paul, MN; or New York, NY. Occasional travel to customer sites may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, test, and deploy AI-powered solutions tailored to complex legal workflows and practice areas.
  • Partner directly with legal customers to understand their needs, workflows, and challenges. Lead discovery sessions, pilots, onboarding, and enablement programs.
  • Build and iterate on AI workflow prototypes and automations using Python and AI-assisted development tools, applying sound practices for security and reliability.
  • Evaluate AI and LLM solutions for legal use cases, assessing outputs for legal accuracy, relevance, reliability, and usability.
  • Design, iterate, and optimize advanced prompting strategies for specialized legal-domain tasks.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks, including benchmark datasets, rubrics, and regression checks, to systematically assess AI output quality across legal workflows.
  • Train and enable legal teams on AI tool adoption, prompt best practices, and workflow integration.
  • Share legal AI expertise through documentation, playbooks, and knowledge sharing with customers and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, legal, and design partners to prioritize work, manage delivery commitments, and continuously improve the customer experience.

Required Qualifications

  • JD or LLB (required or strongly preferred).
  • 5+ years of total professional experience, including at least 2 years in legal practice at a law firm or in-house legal department, or in a legal technology product role.
  • Fluency in legal terminology and experience working directly with or alongside legal teams.
  • Comfort working with AI tools and AI-assisted development environments.
  • Strong knowledge of AI and LLM evaluation methodologies.
  • Advanced prompt-engineering skills, including the ability to design, test, iterate, and optimize prompts for legal-domain use cases.
  • Experience evaluating AI-generated outputs for legal accuracy, relevance, reliability, and safety.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly with both lawyers and engineers.
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and present in client workshops or knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Strong client-facing skills, with the ability to build trust with lawyers, GCs, and legal leadership.
  • Collaborative, growth-oriented mindset and a commitment to ethical AI, privacy, and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Python scripting experience.
  • Experience with legal technology platforms, legal SaaS products, or AI-enabled legal workflows.
  • Experience building or evaluating AI tools for specific legal practice areas (transactional, litigation, compliance, or intake).
  • Experience with Thomson Reuters legal products or comparable legal AI platforms.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
