Job Title: Data Engineer – Underwriting Performance

Reporting to: Head of Data Design and Engineering

Product Team Alignment: Underwriting Performance Team

Position Type: Permanent, minimum 3 days in the office per week.

Overview:

Why Tokio Marine HCC?

Standing still is not an option in the current world of Insurance. TMHCC are one of the world’s leading Specialty Insurers. With deep expertise in our chosen lines of business, our unparalleled track record and a solid balance sheet, TMHCC evaluates and manages risk like no one else in the industry. Looking beyond profit, empowering our people and delivering on our commitments are at the core of our customer values, and so is a desire to grow and provide creative and innovative solutions to our clients.

Job Purpose:

To work as the Data Engineer embedded within the Underwriting Performance (UWP) product team, designing, building and supporting high-quality data pipelines and data products on TMHCC’s Snowflake data platform. The role is seconded to UWP day to day while remaining part of the Data Design & Engineering (DD&E) function, reporting to the Head of Data Design and Engineering. The post-holder works to UWP priorities for delivery, and to DD&E for engineering quality, design consistency and platform standards. They help both sides find the right solution when priorities and standards pull in different directions, which enables consistent, trusted analytics and insight across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

· Design, develop and maintain data pipelines ingesting data from internal and external sources into Snowflake

· Build, test and document data models and data products using dbt Cloud, in line with TMHCC data standards and Medallion Architecture principles

· Work closely with the UWP product team, underwriters, actuarial, operations and other business stakeholders to understand product priorities and shape data requirements into well-defined, deliverable work

· Constructively challenge requirements that are unclear, insufficiently justified or inconsistent with the platform architecture, offering pragmatic alternatives

· Champion the data platform’s standards within the product team, reusing shared and conformed models and avoiding product-specific workarounds, and bring design decisions with wider impact to DD&E design governance

· Manage stakeholder expectations on scope, priority and timelines through transparent estimation and clear explanation of trade-offs

· Take an active part in agile ceremonies (refinement, planning, reviews and retrospectives) and contribute to the UWP data product roadmap

· Ensure data quality through the implementation of tests, validations and monitoring

· Support the operation and reliability of production data pipelines, including investigating and resolving data issues

· Contribute to version control, CI/CD pipelines and peer code reviews, with attention to Snowflake performance and cost

· Maintain clear technical documentation for data models, pipelines and processes

· Adhere to data security, governance and regulatory requirements at all times

Performance Objectives:

· Become a trusted data engineering partner to the UWP team, helping shape the technical direction of its data backlog

· Independently deliver production-ready data products and dbt models that meet DD&E design and engineering standards

· Improve delivery predictability by making sure requirements are well understood and agreed before build begins

· Build trust with UWP and wider stakeholders by providing reliable, well-documented data assets

· Contribute to engineering practice and standards across DD&E, sharing knowledge beyond the UWP team

Skills and Experience Specification:

Essential:

· Substantial data engineering experience, having delivered through multiple full project lifecycles from discovery and requirements to production and ongoing support

· Strong practical experience building production data pipelines and models on Snowflake

· Commercial experience with dbt Cloud, including models, tests, macros, incremental strategies, snapshots, environments and jobs

· Strong data engineering fundamentals: advanced SQL, dimensional modelling, handling of slowly changing data, and layered architectures such as Medallion

· Experience working in agile delivery teams, ideally with a data product mindset

· Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to challenge and refine requirements constructively

· Experience working within an embedded or matrix model while maintaining shared engineering standards

· Experience using Git, pull requests, code reviews and CI/CD for data

· Sound understanding of data quality, testing and data governance principles

Desirable:

· Experience working with insurance, ideally specialty or London Market underwriting data, or other regulated industries

· Familiarity with data from core insurance systems (e.g. policy administration, claims and billing platforms)

· Experience supporting analytics or BI tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Looker)

· Knowledge of data security and access control patterns in Snowflake

· Snowflake certification (e.g. SnowPro Core or Advanced)

· Experience mentoring or supporting other engineers

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
