The posting

Conductor/Engineer Akron Barberton Cluster Railway (ABC) is a Class III terminal switching railroad serving the greater Akron, Ohio area. Although ABC traces its origins to the late nineteenth century, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Wheeling Corporation in 1994. The company's general offices and primary yard operations are located in Barberton, Ohio, with secondary switching and storage operations at Firestone Yard in Akron. ABC is seeking a dedicated, safety-focused Conductor/Engineer to join our operations team. This position plays a critical role in the safe and efficient movement of rail cars and locomotives throughout our service territory.  Responsibilities

Obtain operating instructions from dispatchers, yardmasters, and other railroad personnel through written communications, radio, and telephone. Operate track switches and derails to safely route trains and rail cars. Perform switching operations, including coupling and uncoupling rail cars and air hoses. Inspect freight cars, equipment, and track conditions. Operate hand brakes and other railroad equipment as required. Safely mount and dismount locomotives and rail cars. Ride moving rail cars during switching operations when necessary. Monitor and control rail car movement, speed, and clearance distances. Read, interpret, and follow operating instructions, bulletins, and work orders. Complete required reports and related documentation accurately and timely. Perform work in compliance with all company operating rules, safety regulations, and federal requirements.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver's license required. Minimum of one year of outdoor work experience required. Strong commitment to workplace safety. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance.

Physical Requirements The successful candidate must be able to:

Work safely outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods. Walk long distances on uneven and irregular surfaces. Frequently climb ladders on rail cars and locomotives. Safely get on and off railroad equipment, including moving equipment when required by operational procedures. Ride moving rail cars during switching operations. Lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 85 pounds. Reach overhead and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday. Sit for extended periods as operational needs require. Maintain situational awareness and safely work around moving locomotives, rail cars, and heavy equipment.

Additional considerations:

Employees are subject to pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing. A DUI or OVI conviction within the past three years may disqualify an applicant from consideration.

Work Environment This position is performed in an active railroad environment around moving locomotives, freight cars, and heavy equipment. Employees must be able to work safely in a fast-paced environment, adapt to changing operational needs, and consistently follow all operating and safety rules.
