What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Circle Lead Engineer (CLE) to join our organization as we grow and transform our Personal Insurance Technology landscape. Individual will complete expert end to end engineering tasks as well as manage and lead the development and work products of software engineers. Individual will also plan and execute at a strategic level, lead and influence resources and outcomes, lead the design, development and implementation of significantly complex, unscoped problems that extend beyond the confines of a team, and establish software engineering best practices and standards.

What Will You Do?

  • The CLE is accountable for the set of technical product solutions in the circle, ensuring they are well bounded and composable, all while growing and nurturing the circle’s engineering team’s skillsets. This includes:
  • Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance and leadership to Team Lead Engineers though helping them understand how their team’s technical solutions fit together to accelerate the Circle’s mission.
  • Solution Architecture and Design: Collaborate with the Team Lead Engineers to define the solution architectures and design of the technical components to ensure boundaries are maintained. Partners with and defers to architecture when an architecturally significant change is needed for a design that spans teams.
  • Best Practices and Quality Assurance: Ensures teams are producing systems that meets all non-functional requirements, is well-bounded, composable, and adheres to Software Engineering best practices. Provides feedback to Team Lead Engineers to help them improve their system building skills.
  • Collaboration with Circle Leadership: Works closely with the Circle leaders to ensure the Circle’s mission, vision, and objectives and KPIs are satisfied by the systems being maintained and built by the teams. Provides oversight to ensure capabilities are properly bounded.
  • Estimation and Planning: Participate in increment planning sessions to assist with and provide oversight over the estimation of the technical effort required for implementing features, user stories and tasks. Help the teams, where necessary, break down work into smaller, actionable tasks.
  • Technical Integrations: Own technical interdependencies of systems within the Circle and ensure an adequate interaction model across teams to support these.
  • Problem Solving: Help the Team Lead Engineers overcome technical challenges and roadblocks by offering expertise, brainstorming solutions, and providing support as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the Circle, encouraging experimentation, learning, and the adoption of new technologies and practices.
  • Lead by example, mentor, and coach: Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to quality in all aspects of the work. Mentor Team Lead Engineers, helping them develop their technical skills and grow as engineers and leaders. Provide coaching on topics such as soft skills, coding practices, design patterns, and system architecture
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • 7+years in programming and software development.
  • Proven track record of empowering and guiding multiple teams simultaneously.

  • Domain Expertise: Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to leverage expertise to improve company level capabilities within domain, consult on business priorities and optimize value by identifying business aligned solutions and thoughtfully and practically introduce concepts and technologies from the industry.
  • Problem Solving: Strong problem solver who creates architecture that is particularly robust against single points of failure, both in terms of systems and people and looks ahead 6-12 months to identify areas of need and turns this into action.
  • Communication: Strong communicator who possesses the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document effectively so that systems/architectures can be maintained or built upon, collaborate across disparate groups, helping to identify common goals and gain consensus, adapt language to meet the needs of various levels of technical and non-technical audiences and model and assist others in the practice of mindful communication, active listening, and messaging.

Advanced leadership skills including the ability to leverage internal networks across engineering and engage with other leaders to solve problems and develop strong credibility throughout the company as well as choose the most critical engineering challenges and work to improve the entire engineering organization by teaching others and sharing knowledge while creating opportunities for others to showcase and develop skills.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
