The posting
As Head of Research & Development, you'll own the technical vision, engineering execution, and innovation agenda for the entire TrueWatch platform. You'll lead the teams building our data ingestion pipelines, storage and query engines, analytics and AI capabilities, and the product experiences our customers rely on every day.
Observability at scale is a hard systems problem: ingesting billions of events per day, storing them cost-efficiently across multiple regions, and answering complex queries in seconds. You'll set the architecture, research priorities, and engineering culture that keep TrueWatch fast, reliable, and ahead of the market — while protecting the cost advantage that defines our pricing.
You'll partner closely with Product, Design, Sales Engineering, and Customer Success, and report to the CTO / executive leadership. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role: you'll build and lead multiple teams, and still go deep on the hardest technical decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and organisation building
- Lead, scale, and develop the R&D organisation across back-end, data platform, front-end, AI/ML, QA, and SRE functions, including hiring, onboarding, and career development.
- Build and coach a strong bench of engineering managers and tech leads, with clear ownership and accountability.
- Foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
- Design team structures, engineering processes, and operating rhythms that scale with the company.
Technical vision and architecture
- Define and drive the overall platform architecture, technical roadmap, and engineering standards for TrueWatch.
- Own the design of high-throughput ingestion, storage, and query systems for logs, metrics, traces, RUM, and security data.
- Drive cost-efficiency in compute, storage, and data transfer to sustain our usage-based pricing advantage.
- Set standards for reliability, scalability, security, testing, and observability of our own platform.
Research and innovation
- Lead applied research into AI-driven observability: anomaly detection, root-cause analysis, alert correlation, and natural-language querying.
- Evaluate emerging technologies (OpenTelemetry, eBPF, columnar storage, LLMs) and turn the promising ones into product capabilities.
- Run structured prototyping and proof-of-concept work, with clear criteria for moving ideas into production.
- Build intellectual property and technical differentiation that keeps TrueWatch ahead of competitors.
Delivery and collaboration
- Partner with Product to shape the roadmap, balancing new features, platform investment, and technical debt.
- Own engineering delivery, release management, CI/CD, and quality processes, including feature flagging and safe rollouts.
- Ensure platform reliability through SLOs, incident management, and post-incident learning.
- Manage the R&D budget, cloud spend, and resource planning, and report progress to executive leadership.
What We're Looking For
- 10-12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading multi-team engineering or R&D organisations, preferably in B2B SaaS, infrastructure, or developer tools.
- Proven track record of building and scaling distributed, data-intensive systems that handle high-volume, real-time workloads.
- Deep expertise in at least one systems language (Go, Rust, Java, or C++) and strong architectural judgement across back-end, data, and front-end layers.
- Strong understanding of storage engines, streaming pipelines, and query performance at scale, including cost optimisation in the cloud.
- Experience leading applied research or innovation programmes and turning prototypes into shipped products.
- Solid grasp of cloud-native architecture on Kubernetes and at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- A track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers and engineering managers.
- Experience owning engineering budgets, roadmaps, and delivery commitments at the leadership level.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to align executives, product, and engineering, and to represent R&D with customers and partners.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, startup environment with an ownership-driven culture.
