Who You Are:

The EHS Specialist keeps Trulite's glass and aluminum manufacturing operation safe, compliant and environmentally responsible. The role owns day-to-day compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its Industrial Establishments Regulation (O. Reg. 851), WSIB requirements and applicable environmental legislation.

Working on the shop floor alongside supervisors, operators, maintenance and the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), the Specialist identifies hazards, leads investigations, delivers training and builds a culture where every employee goes home safe. Key hazards in this environment include heavy glass handling, cuts and lacerations, powered mobile equipment, machine guarding, cutting, tempering and laser-etching equipment, chemicals, noise and ergonomics.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Program Management

  • Develop, maintain and continuously improve the Health & Safety Program, policies and safe work procedures in line with OHSA and O. Reg. 851.
  • Maintain the annual Workplace Violence and Harassment policies, program and risk assessment as required under OHSA.
  • Lead job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for new and existing tasks, equipment and processes.
  • Manage lockout/tagout, machine guarding, confined space, working at heights, hot work and powered mobile equipment programs.
  • Complete Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSRs) for new or modified equipment, such as the Lisec laser etch line, in coordination with engineers and vendors.

Inspections, Audits & Compliance

  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and support JHSC monthly inspections; track corrective actions to closure.
  • Serve as the primary contact for Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) inspectors; manage orders and compliance responses.
  • Maintain required postings, records, SDS library and legislated documentation.
  • Audit contractor safety, including pre-qualification, orientation and on-site compliance.

Incident Management & WSIB

  • Lead or support investigations of injuries, near misses and property damage using root cause analysis; recommend and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Complete MLITSD and JHSC notifications for critical injuries, lost-time injuries and occupational illness within legislated timelines.
  • Manage WSIB claims (Form 7), coordinating with HR on early and safe return to work, modified duties and accommodation.
  • Track and report leading and lagging safety metrics (TRIR, lost-time frequency, near-miss reporting, inspection completion).

Training & Culture

  • Coordinate and deliver training: new-hire safety orientation, WHMIS 2015, Worker/Supervisor Health & Safety Awareness, lockout, forklift and overhead crane/lifting, glass handling, PPE and emergency response.
  • Maintain training records and a skills matrix; schedule recertifications.
  • Support JHSC operations, including certified member training, meetings, minutes and recommendations.
  • Run toolbox talks, safety campaigns and recognition initiatives that encourage hazard reporting.

PPE & Industrial Hygiene

  • Select and manage PPE (cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, safety footwear, eye/face and hearing protection) and conduct PPE assessments.
  • Coordinate noise, air quality, ventilation and ergonomic assessments; manage the hearing conservation program.

Environmental Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Ontario Environmental Protection Act requirements, including any Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs) for air emissions and noise.
  • Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams, registrations and manifests; support recycling of glass cullet and aluminum scrap.
  • Oversee spill prevention and response procedures and chemical storage.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Maintain the emergency response plan, fire safety plan, evacuation drills and first aid program in line with Regulation 1101 (First Aid Requirements).

Labour Relations Collaboration

  • Work with HR and plant leadership on safety-related discipline, work refusals under OHSA s. 43, and any health and safety provisions of the collective agreement.

Qualifications

Required

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of OHSA, O. Reg. 851, WHMIS 2015, WSIB and Ontario environmental regulations.
  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • JHSC Certification (Parts 1 and 2), or willingness to obtain within 6 months.
  • Standard First Aid / CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.

Preferred

  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional), CHSC or progress toward a designation.
  • Experience in glass, glazing, fenestration, metal fabrication or a similar heavy-material environment.
  • Experience in a unionized workplace.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 management systems.
  • Experience with WSIB claims management and return-to-work programs.
  • Bilingual (English/French) an asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Floor presence: visible, approachable and credible with operators, supervisors and union representatives.
  • Influence and coaching: able to correct unsafe behaviour respectfully and get buy-in without formal authority.
  • Communication: clear written and verbal skills; can turn regulations into practical, plain-language procedures and training.
  • Analytical thinking: uses data and trends to prioritize risk and measure program results.
  • Organization: manages multiple priorities, deadlines and corrective actions to closure.
  • Judgment and discretion: handles injury, medical and investigation information confidentially.
  • Technology: proficient in Microsoft 365; experience with EHS or incident-tracking software an asset.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

About 60% of time is spent on the production floor and 40% in an office setting.

  • Exposure to noise, temperature variation, moving equipment, glass and aluminum handling areas, and chemicals typical of a manufacturing plant.
  • Must wear required PPE in production areas at all times.
  • Regular standing and walking; occasionally bending, climbing ladders or stairs, and lifting up to 25 kg.

Accommodation & Equal Opportunity

Trulite is an equal opportunity employer committed to an inclusive, barrier-free workplace. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
