Work with Baines Simmons

Baines Simmons builds the competence behind aerospace and defence safety. For 25 years we have delivered expert, approachable training and consulting to civil and military aviation organisations worldwide: more than 750 organisations served, over 200,000 professionals trained, and 40 or more regulatory authorities advised.

We work as one with our clients, sharing serious know-how, rigour and expertise. Across every sector, and alongside global regulators, we help organisations continuously improve safety, airworthiness and compliance. We go beyond helping them comply with regulations; we empower them to excel in operational and safety performance.

We look for curiosity, passion, leadership and impact in everyone we work with, including our network of specialist associates. The experts we engage do not just advise on safety. They change how clients manage it. If you want your work to make a measurable difference to aviation safety, we would like to hear from you.

One organisation, four brands

Baines Simmons is one of four TrustFlight brands. TrustFlight is the Aerospace Safety Intelligence Platform, building the technology that helps aviation operate safely and stay compliant. Redline Assured Security delivers government-standard aviation security, and Kenyon International delivers crisis management and response. Each brand keeps its own name, heritage and team. Together we share one platform, one set of values and one purpose: closing the gaps between disconnected tools and providers, because those gaps are where risk accumulates. Working with Baines Simmons means your expertise connects to all four.

Why associates work with us

We believe specialists do their best work when they have the freedom to apply their expertise without unnecessary rules and barriers getting in the way. Our associate relationships are built on trust: we engage experienced professionals and rely on their independent judgement to make the right calls for the customer. We earn our clients' confidence by being honest and dependable with the people we work with, and we respect that associates manage their own time and commitments.

As an associate you join a respected network of surveyors delivering high-profile military airworthiness work, with the backing of an established organisation and the scope to take on further platforms and assignments as you build your track record.

If you want to make a real difference to safety, this is the place to be.

Why this role matters

You will carry out Military Airworthiness Reviews (Mil ARs) on Typhoon Air Systems under the RAF MAR contract, giving the RAF independent, evidence-based assurance that continuing airworthiness is being managed in line with regulation. Your judgements are your own: you set the sample, raise and classify findings, and report outcomes on the evidence, without direction from the customer or from Baines Simmons. Once authorised, you will also carry out Technical Compliance (TC) checks of other surveyors' reports, helping to keep the quality of the whole programme high.

What you will do

· Plan, conduct and report Mil ARs on Typhoon Air Systems in line with the applicable regulation and the RAF MAR contract, coordinated through the Technical Compliance Surveyor/Technical Lead and the platform leads.

· Review aircraft documentation, maintenance records and continuing airworthiness data, and carry out physical aircraft surveys, to a sample that suits the platform and is justifiable on the evidence.

· Raise, classify and record findings clearly and objectively, and agree corrective action and timescales with the MilCAM and CAMO.

· Produce accurate, evidence-based Mil AR reports within the timescales set out in the contract.

· Carry out Technical Compliance (TC) checks of reports produced by other members of the MAR team when authorised to do so.

· Deliver Mil ARs at deployed and overseas locations as required, working within CONDO regulations and local security arrangements.

· Maintain your Mil AR authorisations, platform currency and continuation training, and complete any training needed for additional platform authorisations you take on.

· Handle all contract and MOD-owned information in line with JSP 440 and TrustFlight information security requirements.

· Support the wider RAF MAR team by sharing lessons identified, contributing to the annual review meeting and mentoring less experienced surveyors.

What success looks like

· Your allocated Mil ARs and TC checks are completed in full and to programme, contributing to delivery of the annual RAF MAR contract target.

· Your reports are issued within contracted timescales and accepted by the customer without material rework.

· Your findings are accurate, correctly classified and tracked through to closure.

· Your authorisations and platform currency are maintained throughout.

· No valid customer complaint or contractual non-conformance is attributable to your reviews.

What you will bring

· At least 10 years' experience in military Continuing Airworthiness (CAw).

· At least 5 years' experience in Air System Maintenance at supervisory level.

· If you are serving or ex-Service: Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) rank or above, and a level of competence comparable to that required to hold an authorisation permitting the deferment of corrective maintenance by raising the appropriate entries in the MOD Form 700C or equivalent.

· If you do not have a Service background: demonstrable equivalent experience and competence gained in a military continuing airworthiness environment.

· Recent experience of operating within a Military CAMO.

· A working knowledge of the Military Aviation Authority Regulatory Articles (RAs), with detailed familiarity with RA 4970 to RA 4974.

· Detailed familiarity with AP100B-01 Order 1.14 and its associated annexes.

· The ability to write clear, concise, evidence-based reports for a customer audience, and to hold a position under challenge.

· Strong Excel skills, as review planning, sampling and findings tracking are managed in spreadsheets, plus confidence with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Teams, SharePoint) and Adobe Acrobat, including fillable forms.

· SC security clearance, or eligibility to obtain it, and the ability to meet overseas deployment requirements (valid passport, fit to travel).

Nice to have

· Previous experience of delivering Mil ARs on the Typhoon Air System.

· Typhoon Manager course, or a Typhoon mechanical or avionic trade course.

· Experience of auditing or quality assurance within a regulated aviation environment.

· Experience of working at deployed or overseas locations under CONDO arrangements.

· Current SC security clearance.

How we work with AI

TrustFlight is an AI-first organisation, and we provide AI training where it is appropriate to the engagement. For this assignment you will look for points in the Mil AR process where approved tooling could reduce administrative effort or improve report quality, and raise them with the Technical Lead. Just as importantly, you will work within the limits set by the RAF MAR contract and JSP 440: contract and MOD-owned information is only ever processed in tools formally approved for that purpose and classification.

Where and how you will work

· Working hours: Varied, in line with the review programme and agreed with you as assignments are allocated.

· Work pattern: Associate/contractor engagement on an assignment basis; a mix of on-site and remote work, varying by platform.

· Travel: Travel to RAF Coningsby, plus occasional overseas travel to carry out Mil ARs at deployed locations (for example Cyprus or the Falkland Islands) under CONDO regulations.

· On-call or shift work: Occasional late shifts, typically 15:00 to 22:00, to meet the contractual requirement for out-of-hours Mil ARs. No on-call rota.

· Screening or clearance: SC security clearance is required and must be maintained throughout the engagement. A valid passport and fitness to travel and deploy are also required.

TrustFlight is an equal opportunities organisation. We are building a network that reflects a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and skills, and we welcome applications from everyone regardless of race, nationality, gender, age, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
