We acknowledge that the Vancouver Campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC) is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam).

The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering (the “Department”), part of the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Surface Mining Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Faculty of Applied Science is committed to offering equitable and competitive salaries, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The starting salary range is $120,000–$140,000 annually plus a comprehensive benefits package. For details, see https://hr.ubc.ca/benefits.

The UBC’s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering offers a broad professional degree program, integrating courses on engineering principles, earth and mineral sciences, mining and mineral processing case studies, health, safety and environmental issues, social sciences and management, as well as economics and business. Emphasis is on providing students with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on skills to succeed in the industry. Our faculty members are active within the industry through research, consulting activities and involvement in professional societies. Further information is available at www.mining.ubc.ca.

This position provides an opportunity to pursue a career focused on excellence in teaching, curriculum design, and educational leadership in a professionally oriented engineering program with strong industry connections.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in educational leadership activities, including curriculum development, teaching and learning innovation, and the development of new or revised courses aligned with evolving industry needs. Contributions may include advancing experiential learning opportunities, such as field-based instruction or design-focused courses, and supporting continuous improvement of the undergraduate curriculum. They will also be expected to teach across the undergraduate Mining Engineering program. They will bring expertise in surface mine design, orebody modelling, and the application of geological models to mine planning and engineering decision-making, and will teach courses covering these areas. They will also teach technical communication and professional engineering practice, and lead the development, implementation, and ongoing delivery of field-based programming, including associated curriculum development, partnership building, and program coordination.

In addition to teaching and educational leadership, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to service activities within the Department, Faculty, and University, as well as to the broader academic and professional community. They will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and industry partners to support the ongoing development and delivery of the program.

Applicants must have a PhD in Mining Engineering or a closely related field and either be registered or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer (PEng) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (see https://www.egbc.ca/Become-a-Member). Professional industry experience is a requirement. They will have evidence of ability and commitment to teaching, and a promise of educational leadership. Experience or interest in curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, or experiential learning is considered an asset. An important component of this role includes supporting the development and assessment of graduate attributes required for accreditation by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (https://engineerscanada.ca). Preference will be given to applicants who are registered as Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with experience in mining engineering practice and a demonstrated interest in engineering education.

The University of British Columbia's primary language of instruction and research is English. Accordingly, individuals are required to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering is a large industry-linked mining school with a global perspective. It takes pride in the quality of its student relations and teaching, based on a strong association with industry. Further information about the Institute is available at www.mining.ubc.ca.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
