Schedule: Full Time

Job Type: Hybrid

Salary Type: Salary

About the Role

Uber Freight builds software that helps shippers, carriers, and operations teams move freight more reliably and efficiently. As a senior engineer, you will lead the delivery of reliable backend systems, work with partners to turn ambiguous problems into practical solutions, and improve how the team builds and operates software. You will apply AI-assisted development and automation thoughtfully, with clear accountability for quality and customer outcomes.

What you will do

  • Own delivery end to end. Lead team-scoped initiatives from problem definition and technical design through implementation, rollout, and production operation.
  • Connect engineering to outcomes. Partner with Product, Operations, and relevant data or ML engineers to understand workflows, clarify requirements, and define measurable success.
  • Design and build dependable systems. Develop backend services, APIs, and data models, making explicit trade-offs among correctness, reliability, performance, cost, and maintainability.
  • Use AI-assisted development responsibly. Apply company-approved tools to development, testing, debugging, and documentation while independently validating changes and protecting confidential code and data.
  • Improve operational quality. Strengthen automated testing, observability, release safety, and incident prevention. Participate in the team’s defined production-support responsibilities.
  • Provide technical leadership. Lead design discussions, give thoughtful code reviews, mentor engineers, and help the team make and document sound decisions.
  • Deliver incrementally. Break ambiguous work into achievable milestones, coordinate dependencies, and communicate risks and scope changes early.
  • Apply automation where it helps. Identify opportunities to reduce customer or operational friction, evaluating conventional software and AI approaches against measurable value and risk.

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Five or more years of software engineering experience, including delivering and operating backend software in production.
  • Strong programming skills in C#, Java, Go, or a comparable backend language, with the ability to become productive in the team’s stack.
  • Experience with systems design, APIs, relational data modeling, and diagnosing failures across services.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a technical project, make practical trade-offs, and collaborate effectively with engineering and business partners.
  • Ability to use AI-assisted engineering tools effectively and critically, demonstrated through professional work, independent projects, or a practical exercise.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with logistics, transportation, marketplaces, or operationally complex enterprise products.
  • Production experience in AI engineering - Agentic RAG / RAG / Knowledge Graphs
  • Experience integrating AI or ML capabilities into production workflows, including evaluation, monitoring, cost/performance management, and appropriate human oversight.
  • A track record of improving engineering practices, reducing operational work, or helping other engineers become more effective.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
