Job Function Summary
Involves the evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, including injury prevention training, for athletes on intercollegiate and/or sports club teams.

Custom Scope
The athletic trainer will work primary on the Parnassus Avenue campus of UCSF. The position entails a clinical component of patient care (90%) and an administrative component brace inventory and assisting with projects and events (10%).
Clinically, the employee will work in the Orthotic and Prosthetic Center as a Certified Fitter of off-the-shelf orthotic devices. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing orthotic patient care primarily for adult hospital patients for treatment of a broad range of medical diagnoses. To a lesser degree, the successful candidate will provide outpatient care within the Parnassus Avenue clinic. The Athletic Trainer/Orthotic Fitter reports directly to the lead ATC / Orthotic Fitter for guidance and clinical support.
Administratively, the athletic trainer will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining inventory levels, opening and logging brace shipments, and assisting in program and department projects and events. Athletic trainers also provide administrative, planning, and staffing support for various educational conferences and community events.
Department Overview
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is responsible for the department's academic, teaching, patient care professional services and research activities under the UCSF School of Medicine. The department has over 250 academic and staff personnel at multiple sites (UC, Mt. Zion, MB, SFGH, and VAMC). The Orthotic and Prosthetic Department provides joint patents care with numerous services across the UCSF health care system.
Responsibilities
Orthotic Patient Care
Treat Off-Shelf orthotic patients, including:
- Applies, manages, and instructs patients on use and care of orthotic appliances.
- Observes and documents in the medical record the patient’s physical and emotional condition; recognizes and reports symptoms of common medical illness in medical record.
- Maintains confidentiality as determined by law and shall accept responsibility for communicating assessment results, treatment plans, and progress with other persons involved in the patient's treatment.
- Evaluation to include ligament and joint arthrometry.
- Educates patients with regard to rehabilitation and home exercise instruction.
- Other duties as specified by clinical assignment.
- Assists with patient rooming, height and weight measurements, and overall patient flow as needed.
- Provides administrative, planning, and staffing support for various educational conferences and community events.
Athletic Training Programs
- Assists with athletic training programs.
Facilities, Equipment and Inventory
Maintains athletic training facilities and equipment, ensuring all athletic equipment is fully operational and athletic training rooms are maintained according to standards.
- Responsibilities may include inventory, ordering and restocking of clinical and clerical supplies.
- Monitors and restocks orthotic inventory.
- Monitors and maintains organization in shipping/receiving of orthotics.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
- Demonstrates skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
- For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
- Organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
- Intermediate manual therapy skills applicable to othopedics and sports medicine.
- Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality involving athletic injuries and treatments.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in the related field and 3 - 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent experience and training.
- Two years’ experience working as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a competitive environment (graduate assistant years applicable).
- Post-employment completion of ABC Certified Fitter course, residency, and Certification.
- Current Athletic Trainer certification and in good standing with the BOC.
- BLS / CPR Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
- Experience with off-shelf bracing and durable medical equipment.
- Previous experience working in a clinical setting with physicians and office assistants.
- Exercise Physiology, research, and performance testing skills and interests.
- Strong familiarity of all Microsoft Office programs.
- Master’s degree or equivalent.
