Job Description

About us

Fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA leads the way in realizing fusion energy, partnering with industry and research organisations to achieve ground-breaking advancements. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid by developing the power stations of tomorrow and the skilled workforce to deliver them.

About the job

As a Waste Services Technician, you’ll help deliver safe and effective waste services across facilities and projects supporting the UKAEA’s work towards sustainable fusion energy. You’ll supervise operational teams, help ensure work meets required safety and quality standards, and contribute to the reliable operation of specialist facilities. This is an opportunity to apply your technical and operational experience in a highly regulated environment while supporting work that contributes to the future of fusion energy.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Supervise waste services operations across assigned facilities and projects, maintaining required safety and operational standards.
  • Monitor work and complete pre-work, start-up, shut-down and post-work inspections of plant and facilities.
  • Brief Operators on assigned tasks and provide training in local work procedures.
  • Produce Safe Systems of Work, including risk assessments, working instructions and method statements, in line with legislation and UKAEA policies.
  • Communicate Safe Systems of Work effectively to contracted Operators before work begins.
  • Support the recruitment and induction of contracted Operatives.
  • Support the Operational Team Leader with wider Waste Services Group initiatives and activities across site.
  • Apply UKAEA best practice and quality standards across the team and wider organisation.
  • Carry out assigned work in accordance with UKAEA policies and procedures.
  • Promote safe working practices and support the health, safety and welfare of colleagues.

What You’ll Bring

  • Level 2 NVQ or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of contamination control processes or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a radioactive environment or equivalent.
  • Experience supervising teams of operatives and allocating assigned tasks.
  • Understanding of safety management principles and relevant UK legislation.
  • Competence using Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Ability to wear required Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), including Tornado Hoods and Air Fed Suits.

UKAEA is an onsite organisation, and this role requires regular onsite presence (usually between 3-5 days in any given week) in line with business needs. We actively support flexible working arrangements where this is compatible with the role.

Benefits

We have a generous range of benefits (see the full list here) and highlights include:

  • A salary of £32,903
  • Up to 7% corporate performance bonus
  • Final salary defined benefits pension scheme with an equivalent of 21.5% employer pension contribution

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
