In this hybrid position, you are the ultimate bridge-builder. You'll stand at the intersection of academic theory and real-world adventure, turning student potential into professional excellence.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the anticipated annual salary is $46,911 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Career Mentorship

  • Pathway Advising: Act as a dedicated mentor for students in outdoor recreation, hospitality, and tourism, helping them navigate career expropriation and professional identity.
  • Skill Translation: Provide expert guidance on resume development and interview preparation, specifically helping students translate “field experience” into professional assets.
  • Workshop & Education: Design and lead seminars on job search strategies and evolving trends of the recreation industry.

Industry Partnership & HUB Coordination

  • Economic Liaison: Build high-level partnerships with Maine's business, government, and non-profit sectors to secure internships and sustainable career pipelines.
  • Experiential Learning: Work with faculty to ensure that classroom learning is matched with “hands-on” field opportunities.
  • Event Architecture: Organize guest speaker series, industry networking nights, and student-led professional initiatives.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with the University of Maine System (UMS) to align regional goals and share industry resources.

Required Skills & Core Competencies

  • Strategic Planning & Organization: Proven ability to plan and organize complex workflows, managing time effectively to accomplish diverse job duties.
  • Innovative Problem Solving: Ability to utilize existing and emerging tools to create innovative approaches to challenges and develop new opportunities within the outdoor recreation and hospitality sectors.
  • Analytical Evaluation: Excellent skill set in observing and evaluating the outcomes of implemented solutions; demonstrated ability to pivot and implement alternative approaches based on lessons learned.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Outstanding interpersonal, written, verbal, and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all university and industry stakeholders.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: A collaborative work style with proven leadership across all levels of employees and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Adaptability: The ability to react positively and effectively to change and a rapidly evolving campus focus.
  • Principled Judgement: Demonstrated ability to make ethical decisions and exercise principled judgement with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Technological Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of and ability to use institutional technology, including PeopleSoft (MainStreet), Concur, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and Zoom.
  • Student Development Foundations: Solid understanding of the sound principles of student development and their application in a higher education setting.
  • Career Development Expertise: Foundational knowledge of career development theories, labor force data, and career resources.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Career Services, Student Affairs, Outdoor Recreation, Business, or a related field.
  • Professional Experience: Four (4) to six (6) years of professional related experience in career services or student affairs, which must include at least three (3) years specifically within the outdoor recreation, hospitality, or tourism industries.
  • Mentorship: Direct experience advising and/or mentoring students or young professionals.
  • Program Development: Demonstrated experience developing internship programs and building successful relationships with employers.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
