Job Summary:

To provide optimum critical/emergency care to sick or injured patients transported by aircraft or other vehicle to UMMC or other designated facility.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years of paramedic experience. Maximum weight limit of 250 pounds when fully clothed. (cannot exceed weight of 250 pounds fully clothed). Individual must be able to lift a patient weighing 250 pounds onto a stretcher and to carry said patient and stretcher for a minimum of fifty (50) feet and load patient and stretcher into a helicopter, or other vehicle, with the help of another provider.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required:

Paramedic from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians. Paramedic from the Mississippi Department of Health required post-hire within 2 weeks. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association. FEMA ICS 100 and 700 from the Emergency Management Institute. One of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians certification: Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), or Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) from the American Academy of Pediatrics/American Heart Association required post-hire within six (6) months. Critical Care Paramedic from the Mississippi Department of Health required post-hire within two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Paramedic from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians in Louisiana and Alabama. Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS) from the American Heart Association and Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) from the American Burn Association. Critical Care Paramedic and Flight Paramedic from the International Board for Specialty Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the information and techniques to identify, diagnose and treat human injuries or diseases for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients. Knowledge of agents, equipment, procedures, and techniques for the provision of emergency and critical care for inter-facility and scene transports. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to remain calm in emergency conditions. Ability to provide physical and psychological treatment and comfort to patients. Ability to withstand exposure to noise, external weather conditions, and work in high altitudes. Ability to maintain and comply with weight and lifting restrictions and requirements. Ability to fill shifts at Jackson UMMC campus or remote site as required.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, plans, provides and documents care for patients in the disaster, transport, (air, ground) and/or the out of hospital environment.
  • Provides physical and psychological comfort to patients, monitors patients condition during transport and adverse reactions to drugs of treatment.
  • Interacts with pre-hospital and hospital personnel to ascertain the details surrounding the illness or injuries.
  • Ensures the proper functioning and inventory of communications equipment, medical equipment and medical supplies. Reports equipment failures.
  • Assists in maintaining, sterilizing and cleaning transport medical equipment to ensure the safety of patients in accordance with UMMC standards and protocols.
  • Promotes a positive image of UMMC by participating in community outreach and educational programs.
  • Assists in precepting and orienting colleagues and healthcare students.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance of patient care provided during transport, prepares and maintains applicable reports and documentation.

Physical and Environmental Demands Requires constant exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, constant handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to bio-hazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, constant travelling to offsite locations, constant activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, frequent lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, frequent climbing, frequent crawling, frequent crouching/stooping, frequent driving, frequent kneeling, frequent pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
