Job Description

Are you an experienced data protection and information governance professional looking for an opportunity to shape data strategy and make a tangible impact across a complex organisation?

We are seeking an exceptional Data Protection Officer & Information Governance Manager to lead the University's information governance framework and be our designated Data Protection Officer. In this important role, you will provide expert advice on data protection, freedom of information, subject access, information governance, and regulatory compliance. You will help to ensure the University operates robustly, confidently, responsibly and in line with its legal obligations.

Working within the Legal Services team, you will collaborate with colleagues across academic and professional services, build strong relationships with senior leaders and external partners, and play a key role in managing risk while enabling innovation and operational excellence. You will also lead the University's response to emerging information governance challenges and opportunities in a rapidly evolving regulatory and digital landscape.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the University's designated Data Protection Officer and principal contact for the Information Commissioner's Office.
  • Lead and develop the University's information governance framework, policies, procedures and guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection, freedom of information and environmental information legislation.
  • Manage complex data protection matters including DPIAs, data breaches, complaints and regulatory enquiries.
  • Lead, support and develop Information Governance Officer colleagues while promoting a culture of good information governance across the University.

A bit about our department

The Legal Services team sits within the University Secretary's Office and supports the University in managing legal, information governance and regulatory responsibilities. The Legal Services team provides specialist advice across a broad range of matters, including information governance, data protection and risk management. The team works collaboratively with colleagues across the University, fostering a pragmatic and solutions-focused approach that enables our University to achieve its strategic ambitions while maintaining robust governance and compliance standards.

We're looking for someone with significant senior experience in data protection and information governance who can combine technical expertise with sound judgement and excellent relationship-building skills. You will be confident advising senior stakeholders, interpreting complex legislation and translating requirements into practical solutions. You will be able to successfully balance competing priorities and provide a sustainable service. Experience within higher education or the public sector, or a professional qualification in data protection, would be advantageous.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
