JOB OVERVIEW
Unrivaled is seeking an experienced, Seasonal Communications Specialist to support the league's basketball communications and media relations efforts throughout the 2026–2027 season. The engagement is expected to begin virtually in December 14, 2026, with onsite production activities in Miami, Florida beginning on or around December 27, 2026, and continuing through approximately mid-March 2027, subject to completion of the agreed scope of services.
The Communication Specialist will have responsibility for developing written communications materials, managing media needs at practices and games, and exercising editorial judgment in preparing and reviewing League communications. The position will be on-site in Miami for the season and will travel to League tour stops. This role requires strong writing skills, sound judgment, knowledge of basketball and sports media, and the ability to independently manage communications responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Media Relations & On-Site Operations
- Serve as an on-site communications contact for designated practices, games, and Unrivaled events, responding to media needs and coordinating access and information.
- Coordinate player, coach, and staff interviews, media availabilities, and postgame press conferences, working directly with players, staff, and members of the media.
- Travel to tour stops and manage on-site media relations alongside a member of the Communications team.
- Build and maintain professional working relationships with members of the media and respond to routine media inquiries within the scope of the role.
- Identify and address communications needs that arise during practices, games, and other league activities, coordinating with Communications leadership and other departments as appropriate.
Writing & Editorial
- Draft, edit, and produce basketball communications materials, including game notes, media advisories, statistical and informational materials, and other league communications.
- Develop written content and communications materials based on Unrivaled's priorities, basketball developments, and media needs.
- Write game recaps and develop them into long-form stories for the league's website, working with the on-site reporter to identify and shape storylines.
- Exercise editorial judgment in writing, editing, proofreading, and reviewing communications for accuracy, clarity, tone, and consistency.
Statistics, Information & Media Monitoring
- Research, verify, and distribute statistics, records, and milestones during games to support media coverage and league storytelling.
- Maintain accurate and timely basketball and media information and ensure relevant materials are distributed to media and internal stakeholders.
- Monitor media coverage of Unrivaled and proactively flag notable coverage and emerging issues to Communications leadership.
Project Management
- Manage assigned communications projects and game-day responsibilities with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Perform other substantive communications and media relations responsibilities consistent with the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience in sports communications or media relations with a professional or collegiate team, league, or agency; WNBA or women’s basketball experience strongly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of Unrivaled, women’s basketball, and the sport’s elite players.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with experience producing game notes, recaps, or long-form spoServe as an on-site communications contact for designated practices, games, and League events, responding to media needs and coordinating access and information.rts content.
- Game-night communications experience, including statistics, records research, and postgame media operations.
- Proven professionalism and discretion when working directly with players, coaches, staff, and members of the media.
- Proactive and self-directed, with the ability to anticipate needs and step in where needed in a fast-paced, live-event environment.
- Must be located in the Miami, FL area or be willing to move there during the season (relocation expenses are not provided).
- Ability to travel for Unrivaled tour stops, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as the schedule requires.
