About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City, you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team:

Upstart’s Core Pricing team drives key initiatives that directly influence our revenue streams, unit economics, and product strategy. The team builds and evolves the common systems used to translate underwriting insights into accurate risk and profitability decisions for every loan we originate, while enabling a seamless borrower experience across products.

As a Senior Software Engineer on Core Pricing, you will design and build scalable, reliable systems that power pricing decisions across Upstart’s products. In close partnership with engineering, data science, product, and business teams, you will own meaningful technical projects, improve the architecture and reliability of our pricing services, and help translate complex modeling and business requirements into durable software capabilities.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Design, build, and evolve high-performance, real-time pricing systems that support critical lending decisions across Upstart products.
  • Own complex engineering projects from technical design through delivery, balancing scalability, reliability, correctness, and speed of iteration.
  • Partner with data scientists, product managers, and business stakeholders to translate modeling and business requirements into reliable software solutions.
  • Identify and implement architectural improvements that increase the flexibility, maintainability, observability, and resilience of pricing services.
  • Contribute to technical standards for system design, testing, monitoring, and operational excellence within the Core Pricing team.
  • Support other engineers through design reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing while contributing to sound technical decisions across the team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or its equivalent, plus 4 years of software engineering experience.
  • Experience writing production software in Python and working with Java, Kotlin, or another strongly typed programming language.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating scalable APIs, distributed systems, or microservices in a cloud environment such as AWS or GCP.
  • Experience owning the technical design and delivery of complex software projects from development through production.
  • Experience building production systems with requirements related to scalability, latency, reliability, or correctness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of fintech, financial systems, financial mathematics, statistics, machine learning platforms, or decisioning systems.
  • Experience working on business-critical systems that affect revenue, profitability, risk, or core product outcomes.
  • Experience with distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, platform engineering, continuous integration and deployment, or infrastructure as code.
  • Experience partnering with data science and product teams to productionize models, decisioning logic, or experimentation capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering and non-engineering teams on technically complex initiatives.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
