Position Overview and Promotion Potential

The Office of the Circuit Executive for the Eighth Circuit Courts is seeking a detail-oriented Space and Facilities Specialist/Space Planner in St. Louis, MO. Working under the guidance of the Assistant Circuit Executive for Space and Facilities, this position is responsible for management and oversight of space and facilities projects, from designing historic judges’ chambers to modernizing courtrooms. The role focuses on space planning, interior layout design, finish selections, and furniture specifications across renovations and new construction projects, ranging from minor office adjustments to large-scale facility installations. In addition, this position coordinates building maintenance and workplace moves, performs some procurement activities, and regularly travels within the circuit.

Candidates may be hired at any classification level within the range depending on their qualifications. Applicants meeting the baseline requirements will enter at the CL-27 level, while those possessing the preferred qualifications, including advanced furniture systems expertise, a relevant degree or professional certification, or past court experience, may be considered for direct appointment at the CL-28 or CL-29 levels. For candidates starting at CL-27 or CL-28, this position features non-competitive promotion potential to higher grades without further job posting or competition, based on performance and time-in-service.

Representative Duties

· Develops detailed AutoCAD space plans, furniture configurations, and material finish schedules for judges’ chambers, courtroom modernizations, and office reconfigurations to optimize space utilization.

· Prepares design options (fabrics, finishes, acoustic treatments) to assist judges and court executives in selecting furnishings that align with the U.S. Courts Design Guide.

· Collaborates on reviewing architectural blueprints and vendor drawings.

· Coordinates furniture deliveries, installation crews, and office moves.

· Prepares project funding requests, uses standardized government purchasing contracts, obtains competitive vendor quotes, drafts purchase orders, and tracks project expenditures.

· Maintains a master furniture inventory, physical fabric sample libraries, and finish standards databases.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

· A high school diploma or equivalent.

· A minimum of two to three years of progressively responsible experience in space planning, furniture layout design, commercial property management, or project coordination for a commercial furniture dealership.

· Functional proficiency using AutoCAD to modify, verify, and update 2D floor plans and layout dimensions.

· Clear written and verbal communication skills to present design layouts and material samples to judicial officers and court executives, and to coordinate delivery schedules, vendors, and physical office moves.

· Must meet federal judiciary citizenship/employment eligibility requirements (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident actively seeking citizenship).

· Position subject to FBI background check.

· Moderate travel required.

· The ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and stand for periods of time. Work involves moving furniture and equipment.

Preferred

· Four or more years of specialized commercial interior design, space planning, move coordination, and FF&E specification experience, with a heavy emphasis on furniture systems.

· An associate degree in interior design, interior architecture, drafting, or a related technical field, or a bachelor’s degree in interior design, interior architecture, or architecture.

· Knowledge of government procurement policies, the U.S. Courts Design Guide, and the Guide to Judiciary Policy.

· Prior professional interior design experience within a federal, state, or appellate court environment, or similar public sector facility setting.

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
