The posting

Scope of responsibilities include Keck Medical Center of USC, OPSC, Norris Cancer Hospital and Ambulatory clinics. Implements programs to maintain and direct the functions of Biomedical Engineering department. Fosters a safe and healthy campus environment, conducive to the learning process. Provide proactive, responsive, testing and repairs of all Biomedical equipment at all campus locations. Works with other Directors and Managers in all patient care areas. Ensures service and maintenance on medical equipment is completed and documented properly as it relates to regulatory and financial compliance. Anticipate and meet the needs of the hospital. Perform routine, complex and specialized tasks involved in the above. Works with the Associate Administrator, Biomedical Engineering to prepare the annual department budget and tracks monthly labor, materials and purchased services costs.

Essential Duties:

  • Manages the effectiveness of management practices and productivity indicators using data such as turnover rates, absenteeism, budget variance, patient, MD, and staff satisfaction surveys.
  • Assures the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Assists with development of policies and procedures. Recommends revisions as appropriate for safety, quality and compliance improvements.
  • Implements and maintains quality control program as appropriate.
  • Assesses and communicates recommendations for utilization of space, space needs, equipment, personnel and other resources as needed to meet operational needs.
  • Prepares and submits reports as necessary to Associate Administrator, Biomedical Engineering or any requiring department in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Manages and oversees the maintenance of all medical equipment in optimal condition regardless of service provider.
  • Assists with diagnosis and correction of systems and equipment malfunctions by making repairs. Ensure that clinical equipment meets specified requirements.
  • Notifies user departments regarding status of repairs and works with departments to obtain loaner or replacement equipment as required.
  • Plans and assists with applications, including coordinating responses to questions, filing of progress reports, filing closure reports, attendance at hearings as requested, assuring licensure application is accurate and up-to-date pertaining to biomedical equipment.
  • Oversees and manages all on-site regulatory inspections, assisting inspectors and surveyors in the performance of their duties; provide reports as required in follow-up to surveys, inspections and audits.
  • Serves on all relevant committees as required and requested.
  • Assists with Interviews and evaluates the qualifications and competence of staff and designs orientation that integrates employee’s needs as well as hospital and department requirements.
  • Adheres to and ensures department complies with all employee health and infection prevention policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, federal law, Joint Commission standards, applicable national organizations, and hospital policies. Ensures organized and proper maintenance of appropriate records and documentation. Ensures continued compliance with same by department employees in an ongoing and orderly manner (clear audit trail).
  • Develops, implements, administers, and modifies programs to maintain biomedical equipment and services through effective utilization of personnel and materials.
  • Serves as a resource to hospital employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
  • Effectively maintains all required records for the department. Demonstrates good organizational skills.
  • Establishes preventative maintenance schedules and prioritizes repair and maintenance work to minimize disruption to hospital operations. Assures accurate and timely documentation of service.
  • Maintains established administrative and regulatory requirements and records for DHS, Joint Commission, CMS and OSHPD.
  • Ensures all hospital departments understand and report all contracted preventative maintenance contracts for all patient care equipment.
  • Utilizes Biomedical Engineering’s CMMS to ensure that equipment inventory information and service records are accurate, current, up-to-date and in compliance with safety, regulatory and legal requirements. Submits performance improvement and monitors reports to EOC committee on a regular schedule and ad-hoc as needed or required.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • In the absence of Biomed Supervisors works with office staff to prepare payroll for all departments.
  • Establishes and maintains performance improvement and quality control activities which support the department and the hospital.
  • Provides for orientation, training, and continuing education of staff.
  • Manages the effective and accurate operation of department’s CMMS. Manages data accuracy and consistency. Provides recommendations for system improvements and enhancements.
  • Assists the Associate Administrator, Biomedical Engineering with the management of maintenance agreements. Makes recommendations for new purchases and renewals.
  • Ensures all employees of the department understand their personal role in the event of a fire or internal/external disaster. Ensures all department members demonstrate cleanliness of self and work area and practice infection prevention.
  • Manages the integration of department’s services on intradepartmental, interdepartmental, and facility levels.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Or
  • Req Bachelor's degree Degree in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration complimented by an Associate degree in Biomedical Engineering (or a related field).
  • Req 5 years Five (5) years middle management level experience in a Biomedical Engineering (or Clinical Engineering) department of a hospital.
  • Req Knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
  • Req Knowledge of principles and practices of biomedical engineering as applied to the maintenance of medical equipment and clinical technology.
  • Req Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req The education and/or experience background must also have demonstrated the ability to write clearly such material as reports analyses, read and interpret complex written materials, and solve complex problems logically and systematically.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $138,445.00 - $228,434.00.
