The posting

Do you have extensive experience in maritime safety, vetting, and compliance? Are you looking for a highly specialized role where sound judgment, technical expertise, and independent decision-making are valued? Would you like to work in an environment where safety, quality, and professional integrity are at the heart of every decision? Then you might be the one we are looking for.

About the role

As a Vetting Specialist, you will be responsible for evaluating vessel suitability and ensuring compliance with VAROPreem's safety, environmental, and operational standards. Working closely with vessel operators, inspectors, authorities, and internal stakeholders, you will review vetting requests, coordinate inspections, and provide expert guidance on maritime safety and compliance matters. This is one of the most specialized roles within VAROPreem, offering a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, where your professional judgment and technical expertise will be central to maintaining high standards across maritime operations. The role also provides the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of vetting policies, processes, and industry best practices.

The position can be based in Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Rotterdam depending on preferred location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily vessel vetting operations in Mainstay.
  • Review requests and approve or reject vessels against VAROPreem policies.
  • Coordinate vessel and office inspections with operators, inspectors and internal stakeholders.
  • Support the organisation with vessel related safety and environmental matters.
  • Manage vetting administration, including invoicing, reporting and statistics.
  • Maintain port, refinery and depot contact.
  • Represent VAROPreem in relevant industry forums.

We offer

At VAROPreem, you will join a welcoming and collaborative workplace where trust, personal responsibility, and professional development are highly valued. As the energy sector undergoes its most significant transformation in decades, you will have the opportunity to contribute to both today's energy needs and tomorrow's more sustainable solutions.

We offer a high degree of autonomy and encourage employees to take initiative, challenge established ways of working, and help shape the future of our business.

Requirements

We believe you bring:

  • Master Mariner with minimum five years of documented experience serving as a senior deck officer (Chief Officer/Master) aboard products, chemical, gas, or crude oil tankers.
  • Extensive experience in managing SIRE/CDI inspections on board vessels, preferably including involvement in preparing responses to observations raised during such inspections.
  • Strong background in maritime safety, compliance and operations.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Fluent in English and preferably German, Swedish and/or Dutch.
  • Driver’s license Class B.

We see it as an advantage if you bring:

  • Experience as a Superintendent, Fleet Manager, or in a shore-based position within a shipping company.
  • Sound knowledge of barges
  • Deep understanding of regulations and industry standards governing inland waterway/deep-sea transportation.
  • Experience from gas-carriers.
  • A broad professional network.

About you

You are a structured and analytical professional who approaches complex situations with calm, objectivity, and attention to detail. Strong integrity and sound judgment enable you to make well-considered decisions independently, even when faced with differing opinions or external pressure. At the same time, you build credibility through clear communication, a collaborative mindset, and a respectful approach to working with others. We place great emphasis on personal suitability and value professionals who combine expertise with humility, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Next steps

We look forward to receiving your application as soon as possible, but no later than 8 November 2026. Applying is easy – simply submit your CV or link your LinkedIn profile and answer a few screening questions. If you choose to apply with your LinkedIn profile and progress in the process, you will be asked to provide a CV at a later stage.

To ensure an objective and fair selection process, we use assessment tests as part of our recruitment process.

If you have any questions about the role or the recruitment process, you are welcome to contact Hiring Manager Captain Daniel Berndolf, Head of Shipping, [email protected] or Recruitment Partner Caroline Ohlsson, [email protected].

Background Checks and Security Requirements

As VAROPreem operates within critical infrastructure, a background screening as well as alcohol and drug testing will be conducted prior to any employment offer. During the interview process, candidates must be able to present a valid form of identification, such as a passport or national identity card, alternatively a population registration certificate together with a valid driving licence.

As parts of VAROPreem’s operations are subject to security-sensitive regulations, a security clearance, including a background check through official registers, may be required depending on the position. Any such security screening will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Swedish Security Protection Act.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
