Job Description
Position Summary
The Maintenance, Reliability & Systems Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing reliability-centered maintenance strategies while designing, integrating, and optimizing the manufacturing systems and infrastructure that support equipment performance. This role bridges the gap between traditional reliability engineering and industrial systems engineering—owning both the strategic maintenance framework and the technical systems architecture that enables data-driven asset management. The engineer partners closely with maintenance technicians, manufacturing engineering, production teams, and IT/OT stakeholders to drive continuous improvement in equipment reliability and system performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reliability Engineering
- Develop and implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) programs for critical manufacturing equipment
- Conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA) on recurring equipment failures and implement corrective actions
- Perform failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to identify and mitigate potential failure risks
- Analyze equipment performance data (MTBF, MTTR, OEE) to identify trends and improvement opportunities
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for equipment reliability and maintenance effectiveness
Systems Engineering & Integration
- Design, implement, and maintain integrated manufacturing systems including PLC/HMI, SCADA, and machine controls
- Architect and optimize data acquisition systems that connect equipment sensors, controllers, and analytics platforms
- Develop and manage the CMMS (MaintainX) environment including system configuration, workflow automation, API integrations, and reporting architecture
- Lead IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) initiatives to enable real-time equipment monitoring and condition-based alerting
- Integrate maintenance and production systems (CMMS, MES, ERP) to ensure seamless data flow and operational visibility
- Evaluate, select, and deploy new technologies and platforms that advance maintenance and reliability capabilities
- Manage industrial network infrastructure supporting equipment communication and data collection
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Design and optimize preventive maintenance (PM) schedules based on equipment criticality and failure data
- Implement and manage predictive maintenance (PdM) technologies (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasound)
- Develop condition-based monitoring strategies leveraging sensor data and analytics to transition from reactive to proactive maintenance
- Build automated alerting and escalation systems based on real-time equipment health data
- Continuously refine PM task lists, frequencies, and procedures based on reliability data and system feedback
Maintenance Planning & Optimization
- Partner with maintenance supervisors and technicians to improve work order planning and execution
- Develop dashboards, reports, and analytics tools to provide actionable insights on asset health and maintenance performance
- Develop and maintain equipment Bill of Materials (BOM) and critical spare parts inventory strategies
- Support capital project planning for equipment upgrades, replacements, and new installations
- Create and maintain technical documentation for system architectures, integrations, and standard operating procedures
Continuous Improvement
- Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to improve equipment reliability, system performance, and reduce downtime
- Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) methodologies
- Identify opportunities for automation and digital transformation within maintenance operations
- Develop and deliver training programs for maintenance technicians on reliability best practices and system usage
- Benchmark internal and external best practices to drive world-class maintenance and systems performance
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field
- 3–5 years of experience in maintenance/reliability engineering, systems engineering, or manufacturing engineering in an industrial/manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of reliability principles including RCM, FMEA, RCFA, and Weibull analysis
- Experience designing or administering industrial systems (PLC, HMI, SCADA, sensor networks)
- Proficiency with CMMS platforms (MaintainX preferred) including configuration, API usage, and workflow automation
- Strong data analysis skills including statistical methods, database querying, and dashboard development
- Working knowledge of industrial networking, communication protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus, Ethernet/IP), and IT/OT convergence
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations and safety standards
- Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
- INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) or equivalent
- Experience with predictive maintenance technologies (vibration, thermography, ultrasound)
- Proficiency in scripting or programming languages (Python, SQL, VBA) for data analysis and system automation
- Experience with IIoT platforms, edge computing, and cloud-based analytics
- Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
- Experience with CNC punch presses, laser cutting systems, and press brake equipment
- Knowledge of TPM and OEE improvement strategies
- Project management experience
Competencies
- Systems thinking—ability to understand complex interdependencies across equipment, data, and processes
- Analytical thinking and data-driven decision making
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and software domains
- Effective communication across all levels of the organization, including translating technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Self-directed with a continuous improvement and innovation mindset
- Collaborative team player with strong cross-functional partnership skills
