Je bestuurt zelfstandig en op eigen verantwoordelijkheid, een vrachtwagen met of zonder aanhangwagen of trekker met oplegger.

Met dit zwaar en omvangrijk wegvoertuig vervoer je goederen via de openbare weg. Je levert die goederen veilig en op tijd af bij de bestemmeling. Je zorgt voor het basisonderhoud van het voertuig. Je lokaliseert defecten aan de vrachtwagen en verhelpt kleine storingen. Voor het vertrek controleer je de technische geschiktheid van de vrachtwagen.

Je vult de vereiste documenten in en houdt die bij. Je controleert de lading, ook tijdens het laden en lossen. Je rijdt behendig en in overeenstemming met de geldende wetgeving. Je houdt rekening met de technische vereisten van het voertuig. Je reageert gepast op onverwachte situaties zoals files, ongevallen en wegomleggingen.

Je brengt bij de transportonderneming verslag uit.

Je werkt vaak op onregelmatige tijdstippen. Je hebt soms lange werkdagen. Weersomstandigheden, de staat van het voertuig, de lading en het gedrag van de andere weggebruikers beïnvloeden de risico's op ongevallen. Zelf houd je je strikt aan de verkeersreglementen en aan de verordeningen inzake rij- en rusttijden. Je bent onafgebroken aandachtig tijdens het rijden. Lange ritten belasten je rug. Een goede conditie is vereist.
