Job Description

Who will you work with?

Join a team developing industry-leading locomotive control technologies and gain hands-on experience across the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through manufacturing, testing, and field support. Working alongside experienced engineers, you'll contribute to innovative solutions while building expertise in mechanical design, product development, and systems engineering. This role offers valuable mentorship, professional development opportunities, and exposure to a global organization committed to advancing transportation technology.

What will you do?

The Mechanical Engineer will apply mechanical engineering principles and design process knowledge to support the development and design of locomotive control system solutions for Wabtec's LOCOTROL® product portfolio. This entry-level role provides an opportunity to work with experienced engineers while contributing to product development, testing, and lifecycle support activities.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support the development of innovative mechanical hardware solutions for new and existing locomotive control system products using Design for Excellence (DFX) methodologies.
  • Assist with the design, development, testing, and life-cycle maintenance of automated remote control freight locomotive systems and associated subsystems.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and product documentation.
  • Support mechanical design activities with a focus on manufacturability, producibility, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Participate in troubleshooting field issues, failure investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Create, update, and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation within Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Assist with product introduction into manufacturing, including documentation development, validation testing, and production support.
  • Support engineering change management and product obsolescence activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Program Management.
  • Provide technical support for engineering projects and product development initiatives.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Recent graduate or up to 2 years of engineering experience through internships, co-ops, research projects, or full-time employment.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar through academic projects, internships, or professional experience.
  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and mechanical design principles.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, injection molding, or additive manufacturing.
  • Ability to analyze technical information and solve engineering problems in a collaborative environment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future.

Desired Characteristics

  • Internship, co-op, senior design project, Formula SAE, robotics, or other hands-on engineering project experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) or configuration management systems.
  • Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Interest in electronic enclosure design and electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental testing concepts, including vibration, thermal, and EMI/EMC testing.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with laboratory or shop tools.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and growing within a global engineering organization.
  • Railroad, transportation, industrial automation, or control systems experience is a plus but not required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
