War Child is an international alliance working in 15 countries. This is an international charity working for children and youth affected by war. War Child initiated working in Afghanistan from 2002. In Afghanistan War Child Work with children and youth, who as a result of conflict, live with a combination of poverty, exclusion, and insecurity. These children and youth might include street children, child headed households, children conscripted into armed groups, unaccompanied minors, youth returnees and refugees, and children who have been put in Juvenile Rehabilitation Center and, the children and youth impacted by the climate induced disasters. Our mission is to protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children and youth caught up in conflict, poverty, and exclusion. We also work on building the lives and climate resilient livelihoods of the children and youth. We look forward to a world in which the lives of children and youth are no longer torn apart by war. This is a vision that can only be realized through the collective actions of children and youth themselves, the communities that they live in, their leaders, local organizations, War Child in Afghanistan, governments, and key decision makers.

Your profile

Job Purpose and summary:

The Community-Based Structures (CBS) Casual Trainer is responsible for developing training materials, delivering training sessions, and providing capacity-building support to Community-Based Structures (CBSs), including children, youth, women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs). The Trainer will strengthen CBS capacities in community mobilization, child protection, climate-resilient livelihoods, advocacy, accountability, and community-led development. The role aims to empower CBSs to identify community needs, develop and implement action plans, strengthen governance and organizational capacities, mobilize resources, facilitate referrals, engage with relevant stakeholders, and lead sustainable community initiatives. This is an individual service/training provider role, with assignments and working days determined by the program team's implementation plan and training needs. The position is expected to require approximately three working days per week on average, although the actual schedule may vary depending on program priorities, planned training sessions, and capacity-building requirements.

Job Description

The Duties and responsibilities may include but not limited to:

Training and Capacity Building

  • Develop and adapt CBS training materials in coordination with the Project Coordinator and Climate Resilient Livelihood Advisor, based on identified capacity needs and the project training plan.
  • Facilitate structured, participatory training sessions for Community-Based Structures (CBSs), including Children, youth, women, and Persons with Disabilities (PWD), on role and responsibilities, community mobilization, child protection initiatives, climate resilience livelihood possible initiatives, advocacy, and accountability.
  • Use practical exercises, case studies, group discussions and community-based examples to support participants' understanding and application of learning.
  • Assist CBSs in preparing, managing, and monitoring budgets and financial resources.
  • Support CBSs to analyze their local context, identify community priorities, and develop strategic interventions.
  • Facilitate the development of project proposals, action plans, and implementation frameworks.
  • Support CBSs in identifying and mobilizing local resources, community assets, indigenous knowledge, and stakeholder networks.
  • Facilitate advocacy initiatives and engagement with relevant stakeholders to promote community priorities.
  • Design and deliver capacity-strengthening training sessions, workshops, and learning activities based on identified needs.

Community Mobilization and Empowerment

  • Develop and deliver practical training on livelihood and protection programming, financial literacy and basic business development – IGAs for community-based structures.
  • Train participants to understand the link between livelihood interventions/initiatives, community resilience and protection.
  • Facilitate practical sessions on how to identify viable and market-oriented livelihood opportunities, considering local resources, skills, market demand and community needs.
  • Train and practice with CBS members in developing simple business and livelihood plans, including basic budgeting, costing, pricing, expected income and resource requirements.
  • Provide practical guidance on how to conduct: basic financial management, record keeping, savings and responsible use of income generated through livelihood activities.
  • Support communities on how to identify and mobilize local resources and livelihood opportunities that can contribute to the longer-term operation and sustainability of interventions.
  • Use and practice participatory and inclusive training methods, including practical exercises, case studies, group work and community-based examples.

Child Protection

  • Strengthening CBS capacity on how to create protective environments for children and vulnerable groups through awareness-raising and community engagement.
  • Train CBS members on how to identify protection concerns and facilitate safe referrals to specialized service providers.
  • Train CBSs on how to raise awareness on child protection risks, safeguarding principles, and available protection services.

Climate Resilience and Livelihood

  • Strengthening CBS members’ understanding of climate change risks and community-based climate adaptation practices.
  • Train CBSs on how to promote and identify climate-resilient livelihood opportunities and sustainable community initiatives.
  • Facilitate community discussions on disaster preparedness, resilience building, and adaptation strategies to reduce vulnerability to climate and economic shocks.

Advocacy, Accountability, and Networking

  • Strengthening CBS members' skills in advocacy, negotiation, communication, and engagement with humanitarian and government stakeholders.
  • Train CBSs on how to effectively voice community concerns, influence local decision-making processes, and promote accountability.
  • Train CBSs on how to collectively address broader community issues and sustain community engagement beyond project implementation.

Monitoring, Reporting, and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records of training activities, attendance sheets, assessments, and follow-up actions.
  • Conduct pre- and post-training evaluations to measure learning outcomes and capacity improvements.
  • Document success stories, lessons learned, challenges, and best practices related to CBS strengthening activities.

Person Specification

War Child in Afghanistan operates in a dynamic environment with a team of highly motivated and dedicated staff. The right candidate will share these qualities and bring effective leadership to a diverse team. The successful candidate will be creative problem solver and foster a solution-based approach to management.

Experience and mandatory criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Education, Climate Resilience, Livelihoods, or another relevant field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in delivering training, facilitating workshops, capacity strengthening, community engagement, or implementing humanitarian and development programs.
  • Fluency in Dari and Pashto, with intermediate proficiency in English.
  • Demonstrates strong training delivery and facilitation skills, including the ability to explain concepts clearly, engage participants, encourage discussion, and adapt training methods to different learning needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, active listening, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse participants.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and participatory training approaches, including group discussions, practical exercises, role-plays, case studies, and experience-sharing activities.
  • Ability to prepare training plans, session outlines, presentations, and learning materials, and to organize training sessions effectively within agreed timelines.
  • Ability to assess participants’ learning and knowledge retention, collect feedback, document training results, and prepare clear and timely training reports.
  • Punctual, well-organized, proactive, and able to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, local partners, community structures, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure effective training delivery and follow-up.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of and commitment to War Child UK’s values, mission, and work to protect and promote the rights and well-being of children.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, adaptability, patience, respect for diversity, and the ability to create an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all participants.
