Position Details:

The Opportunity:

As the Extension Coordinator for Agriculture & Natural Resources, you will provide leadership and management for the Master Gardener Program in Island County. In this role, you will recruit, train, lead, coordinate, and support more than 150 WSU-trained volunteers who educate the public and answer questions about home gardening. You will help expand the program’s reach throughout Island County by engaging with community members at more than 25 locations and special events. You will establish and maintain a network of empowered, effectively led volunteer teams to support program delivery and success. Working collaboratively with the Island County Master Gardener Foundation, you will help ensure a healthy, sustainable, and well-funded operation. You will also prepare and present briefings and written reports for the University, the Foundation, elected officials, and other funding partners, highlighting program outcomes and community impacts.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), temporary position. This position is overtime eligible.

Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end June 30, 2027. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.

Monthly Salary: $4,050.92 - $5,829.37 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; demonstrated work experience using these programs.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. The office is based on a matrix organization necessitating cooperation from different agencies, volunteers, and faculty across multiple lines of supervision.
  • Experience working/collaborating with multiple public agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and individuals in partnerships.
  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, program assessment and evaluation.
  • Ability to work a flexible, yet structured schedule with occasional night and weekend shifts to meet the needs of program partners and grant requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and demonstrating effective teaching methods for volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in either education, public relations, or marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with a diverse group of volunteers and community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in organization and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and foster teamwork.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and software including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, email, and familiarity with electronic slide presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively, with persons of varying levels of responsibility and experience, both orally and in writing.
