Join the future of news
We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
About Our Team
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning News and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
Why This Role Matters
We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Subscriptions team at The Washington Post. This role spans the full application stack with a strong emphasis on frontend applications and customer-facing experiences. You will design and build modern web applications primarily using React and TypeScript, while also contributing to backend services built with Java and Node.js and the AWS infrastructure and deployment systems that support them.
As a senior engineer, you will take ownership of complex technical work from design through production, contribute to architectural decisions, and help improve the quality, performance, reliability, accessibility, and maintainability of the applications our subscription products depend on.
The ideal candidate brings strong frontend engineering experience, particularly with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript, along with practical experience working with backend services and APIs. You should be able to contribute to Java and Node.js applications and be comfortable with AWS, CI/CD, observability, and production operations. This is a frontend-focused role, but you should be capable of delivering effectively across the full stack.
We value autonomy, initiative, strong technical judgment, clear communication, and meaningful day-to-day use of AI-assisted engineering tools, including continually finding new ways to apply AI to software development, automation, operations, and team effectiveness.
What Motivates You
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for the software you build and the customer experiences it supports.
- Passionate about designing accessible, performant, reliable, and maintainable frontend applications.
- Enjoys solving complex frontend and full-stack problems and driving work from design through production.
- Comfortable working across React applications, backend services and APIs, AWS infrastructure, and production operations.
- Proactive and comfortable driving complex work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Interested in understanding how applications operate in production rather than treating deployment and infrastructure as separate concerns.
- Actively uses AI in day-to-day engineering and continually looks for ways to expand its impact on development, testing, automation, troubleshooting, and productivity.
- Enjoys collaborating across engineering, product, and design while mentoring other engineers and communicating technical decisions clearly.
How You'll Support the Mission
- Design, build, test, deploy, and operate customer-facing applications and services supporting our subscription products.
- Develop modern frontend applications primarily using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Build and improve subscription experiences such as checkout, offers, paywalls, product pages, subscriber lifecycle flows, and mobile web and native app integrations.
- Own technical solutions throughout their lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvement.
- Make thoughtful frontend architectural decisions around component design, application structure, state management, API integration, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.
- Build reusable components, shared libraries, and frontend patterns that improve consistency and development efficiency.
- Contribute to backend services, APIs, integrations, automation, and tooling built with Java and Node.js.
- Collaborate with backend engineers to define reliable API contracts and integration patterns that support customer-facing experiences.
- Work with AWS services and infrastructure supporting our applications and contribute to CI/CD, deployment automation, and Infrastructure as Code.
- Establish strong observability and diagnose issues spanning frontend applications, backend services, integrations, infrastructure, and deployment systems.
- Participate in the team’s on-call rotation, taking ownership of incident diagnosis, mitigation, communication, and follow-up.
- Identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, architectural limitations, and opportunities for improvement and proactively drive solutions.
- Mentor engineers and contribute to technical standards, architecture discussions, documentation, code quality, and engineering best practices.
- Use AI throughout the engineering lifecycle to improve development, testing, troubleshooting, automation, documentation, and operational workflows.
The Skills and Experience You Bring
- Broad expertise building responsive, high-performance web applications using React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- Solid background developing backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Node.js.
- Experience working within AWS ecosystems, including containerized workloads (Docker/ECS) and foundational Infrastructure as Code concepts.
- Strong knowledge of core web technologies, responsive layouts, web accessibility standards, and browser performance optimization.
- Hands-on experience establishing CI/CD automation and deployment pipeline configurations.
- Familiarity with production monitoring and observability tools, including logging, metrics, alerting, and incident response.
- Background building conversion-critical customer experiences, such as checkout flows, subscription systems, paywalls, or payment integrations.
- Experience integrating web applications and micro-frontends with native mobile app environments.
- Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering tools to support day-to-day software development, testing, and troubleshooting.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of frontend development with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- 3+ years of backend development with Java, Node.js, or both.
- 2+ years of experience deploying and operating applications in AWS.
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, browser behavior, and frontend performance.
- Experience with frontend architecture, reusable components, state management, API integration, and automated testing.
- Experience building and integrating with RESTful APIs and distributed backend services.
- Experience with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, IAM, and CloudWatch.
- Experience with CI/CD and deployment automation using Jenkins or comparable tooling.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation, or comparable technologies.
- Experience building and operating containerized applications using Docker and ECS.
- Experience with production observability, including logs, metrics, dashboards, alerting, and troubleshooting.
- Experience supporting production applications through on-call rotations and incident response.
- Ability to independently scope and drive complex technical work from design through production.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Significant hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools in day-to-day development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, or automation.
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of frontend development with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
- 4+ years of backend development with Java, Node.js, or both.
- 3+ years of experience designing, deploying, and operating applications in AWS.
- Experience with frontend monorepos, shared component libraries, design systems, or reusable application frameworks.
- Experience building high-volume or conversion-sensitive experiences such as checkout, payments, subscriptions, ecommerce, registration, or account management.
- Experience integrating web applications with native mobile applications.
- Strong experience with Jenkins, AWS CDK, Terraform, containerized deployments, and automated delivery pipelines.
- Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog, Catchpoint, and AWS-native monitoring services.
- Experience improving frontend performance, accessibility, application reliability, and developer productivity.
- Experience mentoring engineers and influencing frontend architecture and engineering practices across team boundaries.
- Advanced use of AI-assisted engineering tools, including helping other engineers apply AI effectively across development, testing, automation, troubleshooting, and operations.
