The posting

This role is for one of Weekday’s clients

Min Experience: 5+ years Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka JobType: full-time

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer – PHP (Laravel) to design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance backend systems powering a large-scale e-commerce platform. The ideal candidate will go beyond feature development to build maintainable architectures, reusable components, and robust engineering foundations that improve development efficiency and long-term system reliability.

In this role, you will own backend services end to end, from database design and API development to automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support. You will contribute to engineering standards, strengthen CI/CD practices, reduce technical debt, and leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software delivery while maintaining high code quality.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services using PHP and Laravel, including RESTful APIs, background workers, and event consumers supporting production workloads.
  • Own services throughout their lifecycle, including architecture, database schema design, implementation, automated testing, deployment pipelines, monitoring dashboards, and on-call support.
  • Design, optimize, and maintain relational database schemas using MySQL and PostgreSQL, focusing on indexing, query performance, scalability, and safe database migrations.
  • Design DynamoDB data models around application access patterns and determine the appropriate use of NoSQL databases for different workloads.
  • Build and maintain integrations with third-party platforms and enterprise systems, including Magento, NetSuite, Algolia, and logistics and carrier systems.
  • Implement reliable integration patterns using retries, idempotency, error handling, and recovery mechanisms to manage failures across dependent systems.
  • Develop event-driven architectures and asynchronous workflows using Amazon SQS and messaging patterns to improve service decoupling and resilience.
  • Implement effective caching and rate-limiting strategies using Redis and Amazon ElastiCache, with clear cache invalidation policies.
  • Write clean, modular, testable, and maintainable PHP code while developing reusable components, shared libraries, and internal tools that improve engineering productivity.
  • Own CI/CD workflows and deployment processes, ensuring reliable releases, automated validation, and minimal or zero downtime.
  • Apply engineering best practices across code quality, modular architecture, observability, security, performance, and technical documentation.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, and similar platforms to improve development workflows, code quality, and delivery speed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify architectural improvements, resolve technical bottlenecks, and reduce technical debt.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, incident response, and knowledge-sharing activities to strengthen engineering standards.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience building and maintaining production-grade backend systems, with strong expertise in PHP and Laravel.
  • Strong knowledge of modern PHP development practices, object-oriented programming, design patterns, and backend application architecture.
  • Proven experience designing relational database schemas, optimizing queries, managing indexes, and executing safe database migrations using MySQL or compatible database engines.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services, including RDS/Aurora, ElastiCache, SQS, and DynamoDB.
  • Strong understanding of microservices, asynchronous processing, message queues, and event-driven architectures, including failure handling and recovery strategies.
  • Experience developing and maintaining RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party platforms or legacy enterprise systems.
  • Proficiency in Docker, Linux, CI/CD pipelines, and production deployment practices.
  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging, metrics, and observability for backend services.
  • Working proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools and the ability to assess their suitability for different engineering tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with project management and documentation tools such as Jira and Confluence.

Good-to-Have Skills

  • Experience integrating with Magento 2 or working with large-scale e-commerce platforms.
  • Experience migrating services from monolithic applications to microservices or modular architectures.
  • Familiarity with NetSuite, Algolia, inventory systems, pricing systems, and logistics integrations.
  • Experience with cloud-native application development and AWS infrastructure optimization.
  • Knowledge of automated testing frameworks, performance testing, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience establishing reusable engineering patterns, internal tooling, and AI-assisted development workflows.

What Success Looks Like

First 30 Days

  • Deliver a meaningful production feature or service with measurable business impact.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the backend architecture, service dependencies, and existing technical challenges.
  • Contribute to code reviews and identify opportunities to improve code quality and maintainability.

Within 3 Months

  • Take end-to-end ownership of a backend service, including its database schema, deployments, dashboards, and operational support.
  • Establish clear service boundaries, useful observability, and appropriate technical documentation.
  • Identify and recommend solutions for at least one significant architectural or operational issue.

Within 6 Months

  • Establish reusable engineering patterns that improve productivity across the engineering team.
  • Reduce incident frequency and improve troubleshooting speed through better monitoring and system design.
  • Simplify development workflows, reduce unnecessary coordination, and improve the reliability and scalability of backend services.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on backend engineer who combines deep PHP and Laravel expertise with a strong understanding of scalable system design, cloud infrastructure, and production operations. You should be proactive in identifying engineering improvements, comfortable owning services independently, and focused on building solutions that make other engineers more productive.

You value clean code, modular architecture, reliability, and long-term maintainability while balancing delivery speed with technical quality. Strong communication, documentation, collaboration, and a continuous improvement mindset are essential for success in this role.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
