Company Description

Why choose an internship with Wellmark? We strive to offer meaningful work that supports your professional development and creates value for the team. During Wellmark’s 2027 Summer Internship Program, you will apply what you have learned in school, gain experience in the health insurance industry, learn from subject matter experts and leaders, and build relationships with fellow interns and technology professionals.

If you are eager to learn, collaborate, develop customer-focused solutions, and grow into an exciting technology career, we hope you will consider an internship with us.

Job Description

What’s the AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering teams?

Our AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering teams work together to create the trusted data, governed platforms, reusable intelligence, engineering patterns, and responsible AI capabilities that support modern technology solutions across Wellmark.

The AI Platform team builds and operates the governed foundation for safe, secure, reliable, and scalable AI. The Enterprise AI Services team builds reusable domain assistants, agents, shared AI services, and agent skills that can be consumed across products, portfolios, and business areas. The Data Engineering team builds and supports the pipelines, data products, APIs, services, and lakehouse capabilities that make trusted data available for applications, analytics, and AI. Interns may contribute across all three areas and learn how trusted data, platform capabilities, and reusable intelligence come together in production-ready AI solutions.

What projects might I support?

Although projects are subject to change, interns may work together as a small delivery team on a shared, end-to-end project. Depending on project needs and interests, you may:

  • Collaborate with fellow interns, engineers, product partners, and subject matter experts to define a problem, divide work, integrate components, and demonstrate a working solution.
  • Build or enhance data ingestion and transformation pipelines that prepare trusted data for analytics, applications, or AI use cases.
  • Work with structured and semi-structured data using lakehouse and medallion concepts, including bronze, silver, and gold data layers.
  • Develop APIs, microservices, serverless components, or event-driven workflows that connect data and AI capabilities.
  • Support AI platform capabilities that enable the safe, secure, responsible, observable, and scalable use of generative AI, large language models, agents, or related services.
  • Build or enhance reusable enterprise AI services, domain assistants, agents, agent skills, prompts, tools, knowledge integrations, or workflows using approved platform capabilities.
  • Apply data quality, governance, lineage, security, privacy, and access-control considerations throughout the solution lifecycle.
  • Create automated tests, monitor solution health, troubleshoot technical issues, and improve reliability and performance.
  • Use infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices to make cloud deployments repeatable, reviewable, and maintainable.
  • Create technical documentation, code samples, architecture diagrams, and best-practice guidance that help other teams adopt the solution.
  • Present project outcomes, lessons learned, and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders.

Ready to bring your strengths to Wellmark? Here’s what’s next! Review the qualifications below. We do not expect one candidate to have experience with every technology listed. We are looking for curious, collaborative problem-solvers who bring a solid foundation and are excited to learn across AI, cloud, software, and data engineering.

This internship will start in May of 2027, working a hybrid schedule from our headquarters in Des Moines. Interns will be aligned to a shared project with opportunities to contribute across AI Platform, Enterprise AI Services, and Data Engineering.

Qualifications

  • Current junior, senior, or master’s student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, Data Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Foundational knowledge of software development, data concepts, or cloud computing, with an interest in artificial intelligence, data engineering, platform engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Experience through coursework, projects, internships, research, or personal learning with at least one programming or query language such as Python, SQL, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, .NET/C#, or C++.
  • Basic understanding of databases, data structures, APIs, data pipelines, cloud services, or machine learning concepts.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, gather information, identify root causes, and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical partners.
  • Ability to manage priorities, adapt to changing needs, work independently, and contribute effectively within a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.

Preferred:

  • Previous internship, co-op, campus leadership role, research position, or professional work experience.
  • Coursework or project experience building data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, APIs, microservices, cloud applications, analytics solutions, or AI-enabled applications.
  • Exposure to AWS services, serverless or event-driven architecture, S3-based data lakes, lakehouse concepts, or distributed data processing.
  • Experience with Python, PySpark, SQL, Node.js, TypeScript, AWS Glue, CDK, Iceberg, Parquet, automated testing, Git, or CI/CD practices.
  • Exposure to generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, RAG, model evaluation, AI governance, observability, data governance, or data quality concepts.
  • Coursework or project exposure to AI agents, domain assistants, prompt and tool integration, knowledge retrieval, workflow automation, or reusable AI services.
  • Experience using modern AI tools to support software development, research, testing, documentation, or productivity.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
