Job Description

Create your best future and join Westpac as a Senior Engineer

What’s the role?

Ready to lead complex engineering outcomes while staying close to design, code and production?

Join Westpac as a Senior Engineer and help deliver safe, reliable and maintainable technology across Shared Data and AI, Digital, or Contact Centre teams.

You will provide hands-on technical leadership within a squad or bounded product area while demonstrating your expertise, judgement and coaching skills. Depending on the team, your work may include customer-facing web or mobile experiences, APIs and distributed services, data products and pipelines, AI-enabled capabilities, colleague tools, contact centre platforms, cloud services or shared engineering foundations.

You will shape ambiguous work, make and explain consequential technical decisions, implement high-value changes, and remain accountable for production outcomes. You will help the squad balance delivery speed with security, resilience, accessibility, operability and long-term sustainability.

You will also raise the capability of others through constructive design and code reviews, pairing, mentoring, clear documentation and incident learning. This is a technical contributor role. Formal people leadership may apply only where stated for a specific vacancy.

This is a hybrid role within Westpac Technology. Opportunities may be available across Shared Data and AI, Digital, and Contact Centre teams. Location and working arrangements will be confirmed for each vacancy.

What do I need?

Essential capabilities

  • Deep hands-on engineering capability and sound code-quality judgement in at least one relevant engineering stack, with experience delivering and supporting production technology through its full lifecycle.
  • Confidence working across service or interface design, data, distributed failure, automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, security and observability.
  • Sound judgement with timeouts, retries, backoff, idempotency, concurrency, consistency, compatibility, migration and failure recovery, or equivalent concerns in your engineering domain.
  • Experience diagnosing imperfect systems, identifying the material issue and implementing proportionate improvements rather than defaulting to broad rewrites.
  • The ability to create risk-aligned evidence through unit, integration, component, contract, end-to-end, performance or resilience testing as appropriate.
  • Experience operating technology in production, including logging, metrics, traces, alerts, dashboards, incident response, recovery and reducing recurring operational toil.
  • A security, privacy and risk-aware approach, with attention to secure defaults, accessibility, customer outcomes and regulatory obligations.
  • Experience coaching engineers through pairing, review and practical problem-solving, using specific and respectful feedback to increase their confidence and ownership.
  • Clear and inclusive communication. You can explain technical choices, invite challenge, adapt to different audiences and work effectively across disciplines.

Experience that may be useful

You do not need experience in every area below. We encourage you to apply if your strengths are relevant or transferable and you are interested in developing domain-specific knowledge.

  • Digital engineering, including web or mobile platforms, design systems, accessibility, customer identity, APIs or high-volume customer experiences.
  • Data and AI engineering, including data platforms, streaming or batch pipelines, analytics, machine learning, generative AI, responsible AI controls, model operations, evaluation or observability.
  • Contact centre technology, including colleague tools, interaction platforms, workflow automation, telephony, conversational experiences or customer-service integration.
  • Cloud-native engineering using AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform or equivalent technologies, including networking, identity, secrets and platform services.
  • Languages and frameworks such as Java, Kotlin, C#/.NET, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, Spring Boot, Node.js or equivalent technologies relevant to the role.
  • Using AI-assisted engineering tools responsibly, including critically reviewing generated designs and code, validating outputs and retaining human accountability.
  • Working in a regulated, high-availability or large enterprise environment.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Lead complex squad-level engineering outcomes through practical implementation, design judgement and influence.
  • Clarify ambiguous problems, identify material constraints and sequence work to deliver value safely.
  • Improve service, interface or data contracts and make trade-offs explicit, proportionate and reversible where possible.
  • Design for distributed failure, production visibility, safe deployment, rollback and recovery.
  • Review technical changes, including AI-generated work, and clearly explain what should be accepted, changed or rejected.
  • Remove unnecessary complexity and help prevent recurring classes of defects or incidents.
  • Create clear decisions, patterns and evidence so the squad can continue independently rather than relying on a single expert.
  • Help the team use shared platforms and recommended tools instead of building reusable solutions

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
