The posting

At Williams College, Campus Safety is built on trust, visibility, and genuine community support. As a non-sworn Campus Safety Services Officer, your job goes far beyond patrolling grounds: you are a primary first responder, a practical problem-solver, and a dependable resource for our students, faculty, and staff. If you enjoy hands-on community work where every day brings something new, we’d love to have you on our team.

Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of a Campus Safety Supervisor:

  • Proactively patrol campus grounds, academic facilities, and multi-story residential halls via foot, vehicle, or bicycle. Maintain high visibility to foster community trust, mitigate safety hazards, and cultivate strong relationships across campus.
  • Rapidly assess, prioritize, and manage competing demands during simultaneous routine calls and urgent emergencies. Serve as a calm and decisive first responder during medical, mental health, facility, and life-safety incidents.
  • Apply empathetic, trauma-informed, and culturally competent communication to resolve interpersonal disputes, support students in distress, and de-escalate complex situations.
  • Approach all interactions with the campus community with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Encourage compliance with college policies through engagement, fair treatment, and education rather than punitive enforcement, supporting an inclusive living-learning environment.
  • Conduct preliminary inquiries into incidents, gathering facts with objectivity and discretion. Utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and report-writing software to generate timely, accurate incident logs.
  • Support central dispatch operations, execute emergency notifications, and contribute to the hands-on onboarding and training of new team members as needed.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform the active physical demands of the position, including walking long distances/standing for extended periods, patrolling in adverse weather conditions, navigating multi-story residential buildings, and safely lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations with excellent judgment and discretion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including computer proficiency and the ability to learn and adapt to new technology or software.
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity, including the ability to maintain effective working relationships with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Possesses strong people skills, patience, and a willingness to assist others, with a perceptive and empathetic approach.

Preferred Experience & Key Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to build authentic, respectful relationships with individuals from broad and intersecting backgrounds.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, grounded in active listening, patience, emotional intelligence, and discretion.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to maintain composure, exercise excellent judgment, and make sound decisions in fast-moving crisis situations.
  • Proficiency with computers, mobile technology, database management, and electronic reporting tools.
  • Prior experience in community service, non-sworn security, higher education, customer service, or emergency response is preferred but not required; comprehensive departmental training will be provided.

Shift Overview:

This position operates on a 4-on, 2-off rotating overnight schedule. Work blocks alternate between 8-hour and 10-hour shift rotations depending on department schedule cycles:

  • 8-Hour Shift Rotation: 11PM - 7AM
  • 10-Hour Shift Rotation: 9PM - 7AM

Additional Shift Requirements:

Campus Safety operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so this position requires flexibility for overtime, mandatory shifts, holiday coverage, and campus emergencies when needed.

Mandatory overtime may be required based on operational needs, such as large campus events, employee call-outs where minimum staffing levels would be compromised, or emergency incidents requiring additional personnel.

This position is eligible for premium pay, including overtime and applicable shift differentials, for work performed during holidays, weekends, emergency snow response, and other qualifying shifts.

Schedules are subject to change based on the operational needs of the department.

The base pay range is $22.00 to $24.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. This position is eligible for shift differentials, including an additional $1.00 per hour between 5:00 PM and midnight, and $2.00 per hour from midnight to 7:00 AM. Weekend shifts receive an additional $0.55 per hour on top of any applicable shift differentials.

Application review will begin on October 28, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
