The posting

The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes. The museum comprises 7 800 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.

The Manager, Museum Retail, leads the strategic end-to-end product development lifecycle and procurement strategy for the Hong Kong Palace Museum retail portfolio. This role is responsible for driving the commercial and creative success of museum merchandise, including desktop stationery, home décor, fashion accessories, and cultural souvenirs. The Manager will lead supplier negotiations, oversee global supply chain mechanics, enforce strict quality assurance, and align product lines with the museum’s curated aesthetic themes and brand mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate Sourcing Strategies: Direct the end-to-end global sourcing, vendor selection, and retail procurement framework in strict compliance with statutory and WESTK authority guidelines.
  • Lead Commercial Negotiations: Drive high-stakes negotiations for unit costing, Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs), payment structures, and production lead times to maximize profit margins.
  • Manage Vendor Relationships: Establish and govern strategic partnerships with global manufacturers, ensuring total adherence to ethical, sustainable, and social compliance standards.
  • Evaluate Performance: Implement performance KPI matrices and conduct formal supplier audits to drive continuous improvement and mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities.

2. Product Development, Design Liaison & Merchandising

  • Orchestrate Product Lifecycles: Act as the principal strategic liaison between the internal museum curation teams, external design agencies, and cross-border manufacturers to transform cultural assets into high-margin consumer goods.
  • Govern Technical Design: Oversee the creation of comprehensive technical packages (tech-packs), manage the sample verification workflow, and grant final production approvals while safeguarding brand and historical accuracy.
  • Direct Compliance Branding: Approve all production artwork, product packaging, and regulatory labeling to ensure seamless alignment with legal, regional, and brand identity requirements.

3. End-to-End Supply Chain Management & Quality Assurance

  • Optimize Operations: Spearhead the macro supply chain lifecycle, ensuring seamless orchestration from raw material sourcing through production to international freight delivery.
  • Manage Inventory Velocity: Partner with logistics, customs, and warehouse operations to optimize inventory distribution, minimize lead times, and prevent stockouts.
  • Enforce Quality Controls: Establish rigorous quality control (QC) protocols and mandate pre-shipment inspections to maintain premium retail standards.
  • Mitigate Risk: Proactively identify global logistics bottlenecks, regulatory changes, and supply chain disruptions, executing robust contingency plans to protect project timelines.
  • Execute Executive Mandates: Perform any alternative leadership duties and strategic projects as assigned by senior management.
  • Performing any other duties from time to time as reasonably assigned by the HKPM.

  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive, high-level experience in retail merchandising, procurement, or product development. Less experience might be considered as Assistant Manager.
  • Specialization: Proven track record in high-quality gifts, premiums, toys, or lifestyle products. Direct experience in museum merchandise or cultural product development is highly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in MS Office (expert-level Excel for data analytics and PowerPoint for executive pitching).
  • Language Skills: Native in written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese). Fluent Putonghua is a highly valued asset for cross-border supplier management.
  • Competencies:Strong leadership capabilities with a proven track record of managing cross-functional projects. Exceptional commercial acumen and advanced negotiation skills. Highly developed cultural sensitivity and a profound appreciation for heritage arts and crafts. Excellent problem-solving skills under tight event-driven and exhibition-driven deadlines.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
