  • PdM/Engineer
  • 英語:Independent(CEFR-B2)歓迎

About Mercari Group

Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people

“What can I do to help society thrive with the finite resources we have?” The Mercari marketplace app was born in 2013 out of this thought by our founder Shintaro Yamada as he traveled the world. We believe that by circulating all forms of value, not just physical things and money, we can create opportunities for anyone to realize their dreams and contribute to society and the people around them.

Mercari aims to use technology to connect people all over the world and create a world where anyone can unleash their potential. You can learn more about our mission on the Culture page of our Careers site.

Organization/Team Mission

In the marketplace business, we drive growth across multiple business lines by delivering value to users, aiming to create value in a global marketplace where anyone can buy and sell. We drive Mercari Group’s mission forward centered on the operation of Mercari, Japan’s largest marketplace service, and through our crossborder business and new business ventures.

Over one million items are listed on the Mercari marketplace every day. However, if those items are not properly categorized and organized, buyers can’t find what they want, and sellers can’t set appropriate prices.

In this position, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing the metadata platform that gives correct meaning to every item on our marketplace.

  • Item categories: The taxonomy system through which users search for and choose items
  • Redesign category structure to make items both easy to list and easy to find
  • Continuously make decisions on adding, merging, and removing categories in line with item trends and market changes
  • Define the item attributes that each category should carry (brand, size, model number, etc.) and their granularity
  • Item catalog: Metadata that groups identical items and links item information and market prices
  • Define the priority of which items to catalog, as well as item attributes to be collected and quality standards to be met
  • Build and expand the catalog itself by combining external data, AI, and operations
  • Improve the accuracy of matching listings with catalog information, and ensure that users continue to receive the correct market prices and item information

This is a strategic position where you will be expected to define and design the ideal metadata for our marketplace, working backward from the ultimate goal of improving the user experience and maximizing business impact.

The metadata built here will be leveraged in various ways, from improving search accuracy and simplifying the listing experience, to scaling the crossborder business and even creating brand new businesses.

  • To learn more about Mercari’s mission and values, see the Culture page of our Careers site.

Work Responsibilities

  • Defining metadata requirements
  • Gather issues and use cases from the teams that leverage metadata, such as search, listing, and new business teams, and define the optimal metadata requirements (item attributes, granularity, hierarchy, etc.)
  • Identify the attributes and quality standards required for each category based on its characteristics (for example, brand, size, and color for fashion items, or manufacturer, model number, and release year for electronics)
  • Review how existing metadata is being used with SQL and other tools, and continuously update it
  • Building metadata and maintaining its quality in collaboration with the operations team (the team handling data entry and other relevant tasks)
  • Complete the development and registration of metadata by designing manuals and directing the operations team
  • Maintain quality after registration through continuous monitoring of metrics such as coverage rate and mismatch rate
  • Automating tasks with AI and standardizing the development process
  • Use AI to automate the various tasks involved in building metadata (such as research, analysis, and registration work) to increase throughput
  • Document decision criteria and procedures as guidelines, and standardize and roll them out in a form that can be reused across other categories and businesses
  • Present engineers with improvement requests for the metadata platform and registration tools, strengthening the development environment itself
  • Contributing to strategy and roadmap development in collaboration with product managers
  • Set the priorities and roadmap in accordance with the order in which metadata is built and optimized
  • Review initiatives and their impact on search, listing, and purchasing, and apply learnings to determine which categories and areas to tackle next

Unique Challenges

  • Delivering significant impact and scale, directly tied to business results Decisions about which attributes to include and how comprehensive they should be increase the accuracy of search, listing, and recommendations, and directly impact the user experience and GMV. The metadata you build will be leveraged not only in our marketplace in Japan, but in our crossborder and new businesses as well.
  • Exploring and defining metadata design from scratch, with no right answer The optimal structure and quality standards differ for each category of items, from fashion to electronics. In the absence of a single right answer, there is excitement and fulfillment in defining the scope and granularity yourself and turning ideas into reality.
  • Building a single set of metadata, leveraged across multiple businesses The metadata you build will be leveraged not only in our marketplace in Japan, but in our crossborder and new businesses as well. A single design decision can benefit several businesses at once—a scale unique to the Mercari platform.
  • Transforming processes with AI, and establishing a new team You will lead the redesign of how work gets done as manual tasks are replaced by AI. That spans everything from determining which parts to leave to AI and which parts humans review (human in the loop) through to standardization and rollout across businesses. You will be joining a newly formed team, meaning you will be able to help build how the team works—from how requirements are defined to the approach to using AI.

Qualifications

  • Required Experience/Skills
  • Shared belief in the mission and values of Mercari Group and its various companies
  • Experience coordinating requirements and driving decision-making by collaborating with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience devising and executing a vision, taking into consideration both user and business perspectives
  • Experience in at least one of the following:
  • Building, managing, and operating master data
  • Supporting decision-making through data analysis using SQL
  • Directing an operations team
  • A positive mindset toward utilizing AI (experience in personally testing and improving AI implementation in business processes)
  • Preferred Experience/Skills
  • Domain knowledge and expertise or a strong interest in a specific category (fashion, hobby items, electronics, etc.)
  • Experience in systematizing and standardizing work using AI
  • Experience defining requirements for product development in collaboration with product managers and engineers
  • Language Requirements
  • Japanese: Proficient (CEFR - C1) required
  • English: Independent (CEFR - B2) preferred
