The posting

Thank you for your interest in ASI Student Government! This application opens on Monday, October 12 at 9 a.m. and will close and is due Friday, October 23 at 9 a.m.

You may refer to the ASI Recruitment & Elections page for position descriptions, responsibility guides, and any additional recruitment information. Please contact ASI Student Government at [email protected] with any questions.

ASI Student Government members are elected or appointed to serve as representatives and advocates for the Cal Poly student body. The corporate responsibilities of Student Government members are defined within the ASI Bylaws. This responsibility guide provides an overview of the key duties and expectations for members of the University Union Advisory Board. Specific responsibilities and levels of involvement may vary throughout the term of office.

The Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) serves as the legal entity and leaseholder for the Julian A. McPhee University Union, Cal Poly Recreation Center, Cal Poly Sports Complex, The Forum, and Doerr Family Field, and is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the Student Body Center Fee.

In accordance with applicable law and the UUAB Operating Code, the University Union Advisory Board (UUAB), serves as the official advisory body to the ASI Executive Director and the University President on matters related to the Student Body Center Fee, its use, and associated facilities and programs. For additional details, refer to the University Union Advisory Board Operations Code.

Members of the UUAB hold an active and engaged role within the organization and across the university. This position requires a weekly time commitment of approximately 5–10 hours, which may include occasional evenings, weekends, and optional travel.

Please note that the UUAB is currently seeking applicants from the the College of Liberal Arts only.

Requirements

Members of the UUAB are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI Policy as a condition of their volunteer assignment.

It is a conflict of interest for ASI to employ members of ASI Student Government and require those individuals to have the responsibility of governing and making decisions regarding the organization by which they are employed. Because of this conflict, it is necessary to separate the roles by not allowing a student to simultaneously hold a position in ASI Student Government and be employed by ASI.

Members of the UUAB shall be nominated for two-year terms and approved by the committee. Following completion of the two-year term, student members may be nominated and re-appointed for an additional one-year term contingent upon approval of the UUAB.

During their term of office, members of the University Union Advisory Board must maintain compliance with all CSU and ASI requirements as outlined in the ASI Bylaws.

Members of the UUAB are entrusted with representing student interests, shaping policy, and ensuring responsible governance.

Representation, Engagement, and Advocacy

  • Represent students from their academic college and communicate their perspectives within the UUAB.
  • Attend and actively participate in all UUAB meetings, workshops, and trainings.
  • Stay informed on issues considered by the UUAB and participate in ASI assessment, planning, and goal-setting efforts.
  • Support student government outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as directed by the Chair of the UUAB.

Governance and Oversight

  • Serve as a voting member of the UUAB.
  • Review and recommend action regarding operation of Student Body Center fee funded facilities to include alterations, expansion, major repairs, and capital outlay.
  • Review and recommend action on the annual University Union (UU) budget.
  • Receive a mid-year financial report to ensure that the use of funds is in accordance with the purpose and consideration of the bond covenants, the university president, and the UU long term facilities plans.
  • Review fiscal and operational UU policies to ensure that they remain current and continue to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Review commercial subleases and recommend action to the University President via the ASI Executive Director.
  • Conduct research and assessment to determine if the needs of Cal Poly students are being addressed.

Committee Responsibilities

  • Serve on ASI internal Standing and ad hoc Committees as appointed by the Chair of the Board.
  • Serve on universitywide and/or Academic Senate committees as appointed by the ASI President.

Summary of Typical Involvement

  • Biweekly UUAB workshops
  • Biweekly UUAB meetings
  • Standing and ad hoc Committee meetings as appointed by the Chair of the Board (varies)
  • Quarterly Kickoff events and related training or leadership development activities

Please refer to the UUAB Operations Code for detailed attendance and participation requirements.

Benefits

Professional development/mentoring to UUAB members will be provided by the ASI Executive Director or designee. As a mentor, the ASI Executive Director or designee will provide constructive feedback and guidance on a regular basis to assist UUAB members in their personal and professional development.

Members of the UUAB receive priority registration and ASI vehicle privileges, if eligible.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
