About The Agency:
Founded in 1960, Northeast Kingdom Health Services (NKHS) has grown to become a State of Vermont Designated Agency serving all communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, comprising Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties.
Our staff of more than 500 provide case management, community and home support, residential care, psychiatry, medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, vocational supports, school-based counseling, emergency care and respite services for 3,400+ clients annually. The agency also offers outreach and consultation services to communities, schools, and businesses in our service area.
Position Overview:
NKHS is seeking an experienced and collaborative Controller to play a key leadership role in the Agency’s financial operations. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will have primary responsibility for managing the monthly financial close process and preparing accurate and timely draft financial statements for review and approval by the CFO. The Controller will also oversee the day-to-day operations of the Business Office, including Accounting, Cash Receipts, and Accounts Payable, providing leadership and direction to staff responsible for these functions and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of the Agency’s financial reporting.
The Controller is responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate financial worksheets, preparing/recording/reviewing journal entries to record significant transactions in the General Ledger. They will be summarizing financial information to support year-end audit and other specialized data requests, applying sound accounting judgment in the reporting of financial transactions consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned accounting professional who enjoys both the technical and people-focused sides of financial leadership. The Controller will supervise and coach the accounting department staff. Strong managerial, communication, and relationship-building skills are essential to continuing to develop a collaborative, capable, and efficient team.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes.
- Management of general ledger accounting system.
- Review, Prepare and post journal entries to the General Ledger monthly or as required to ensure accurate General Ledger balances and/or financial reporting, as needed.
- Complete monthly financial reporting process to ensure reporting to finance committee, the Board and State Partners each month. Including graphs and standard financial reports.
- Review Agency grant revenue spreadsheet monthly.
- Maintains and manages the Accounts Payable process of the Agency.
- Maintain and review financial reporting of billing, revenues, and cash posting information for the Agency.
- Secondary support for monthly General Ledger close and preparation of financial statements including Statement of Cash Flows, Statement of Financial Position, and Statement of Profit or Loss.
- Complete State Electronic Financial Report filing in coordination with CFO.
- Complete payroll ACH transfer(s) and review and approve daily cash receipts.
- Complete Daily Bank transactions including Positive Pay review and uploads. This will include the BCBS transfer for the weekly billing, TIAA CREF and HRA transfers for the payroll deductions.
- Monthly reconciliations of Balance Sheet and selected accounts.
- Prepares for and actively participates in annual audit to ensure timely completion.
- At Tax Year End help in the preparation of the relevant 1099’s in compliance with IRS regulations including the distribution of them.
- Coordinate Staff Living Reimbursement information with IDDS.
- Process voids that are required and not processed by others recording the details.
- Census Bureau reporting.
- Maintain and update policies and procedures related to the BO.
- Complete other Business Office assignments as directed by supervisor or Senior Leadership.
- Supports the social mission of the Agency.
- Supervise accounting and payroll staff.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to accounting and payroll team members, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Be a team player and back up all other accounting positions.
- Establish and maintain trusting and supportive relationships with Program Directors/Managers.
- Establish and maintain a range of external relationships with bankers, state program managers, auditors, and financial staff with other agencies.
- Serve as a trusted financial resource to internal leaders and external partners, communicating financial information clearly and effectively to both financial and non-financial audiences.
- Help identify opportunities to strengthen processes, improve efficiency, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the Business Office.
Education, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration.
- 6+ years of related experience.
- Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation a plus.
- Excellent management and supervisory skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Proficient in accounting software.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- A leadership style that emphasizes teamwork, coaching, trust, and accountability.

Environmental Factors:
- Duties will occur in an office setting but may require occasional appearances in Federal,
- State, or other agency facilities. Duties may include work outside of regular work hours and travel may be required for which a reliable means of personal transportation must be available.
- Must be able to physically manage files, file boxes, use a computer and other office equipment. You must be able to lift, hold, and reach up to ten pounds repetitively and occasionally move banker’s boxes filled with files safely and securely. Must be able to bend to reach and maintain files.
