The posting

Welcome to Merit Restorations.

We specialize in mitigating and rebuilding residential and commercial properties damaged by fire, water, storms, and other disasters. We partner with leading insurance carriers and handle everything from emergency cleanup to complete rebuilds, with a focus on safety, integrity, and advocacy. As entrepreneurs, we take full ownership of the work we do and the families we serve.

At Merit, our purpose is simple and non-negotiable: we work together as a team so we can change lives. Teamwork is the foundation of everything we do—because teamwork creates impact, and impact changes lives. We exist to help people, and the only way we do that at the highest level is by moving as one team, aligned in mission, values, and execution.

Why we exist. We exist for two families. The families we serve and the families inside this company. When we work together and serve our clients at the highest level, both families win.

As the Corporate Accountant for Merit Restorations, you will be working directly for the Controller, based onsite at the company’s corporate office in Purcellville, VA. This role is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting that support Merit Restorations’ monthly close. This role is a key partner to the Controller, producing the flash reporting, scorecards, and cash flow forecasts that leadership and the private equity sponsor rely on to make decisions.

This is a technically strong, detail-driven role suited to someone who enjoys getting the numbers exactly right and can research and document accounting positions independently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Reconciliation and Analysis

  • Prepare and maintain monthly balance sheet reconciliations for all accounts, including first review of reconciliations prepared by others within the team in support of the Controller’s final review and approval.
  • Prepare and analyze the monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedule, tying job cost and billing data to revenue recognition and reconciling to the general ledger for the Controller’s review.
  • Reconcile prepaid accounts and record related monthly amortization.
  • Record and reconcile depreciation and amortization for fixed assets.
  • Account for leases in accordance with GAAP (ASC 842).
  • Research and resolve reconciling items and variances in a timely manner.
  • Maintain reconciliation workpapers in an organized, audit-ready format.

Journal Entries & Accruals

  • Prepare journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, lease accounting and WIP / cost-in-excess-of-billings entries with appropriate and complete supporting documentation.
  • Partner with the Controller on month-end close checklist items.

Reporting Tools & Automation

  • Own the buildout and ongoing maintenance of reports and dashboards using the company’s ERP and reporting tools, including report writing, maintenance and publication; potentially including query-based reports and analysis.
  • Partner with the Controller on the design and implementation of system integration and automation, potentially including OCR / AI based accounts payable automation.

Flash & Management Reporting

  • Maintain the monthly financial reporting package, improving information gathering and reporting to support management analysis and decision making and shortening reporting timelines.
  • Prepare flash financial reporting for leadership ahead of full close.
  • Build and maintain KPI scorecards and ad hoc reporting for finance and operations management.

Cash Flow Forecasting

  • Assist with preparation and updates of the weekly/monthly and 13-week cash flow forecasting.
  • Support actual-vs-forecast variance analysis.

Tax Compliance

  • Coordinate Personal Property Tax returns for all applicable states and jurisdictions.
  • Prepare and file Sales and Use Tax returns for all applicable states and jurisdictions.

Technical Accounting & GAAP Research

  • Research new and evolving GAAP guidance relevant to the business and draft technical accounting memos.
  • Support the Controller in implementing changes in accounting standards.

Audit Support

  • Prepare audit schedules and PBC (prepared-by-client) items for the annual external audit.
  • Respond to auditor requests in a timely, accurate manner.

Ad Hoc & Special Projects

  • Support acquisition-related accounting schedules, analysis, and data migration as newly acquired companies are onboarded onto Sage.
  • Assist with special projects and analysis requested by the Controller or CFO.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
