Position Summary

The BI Specialist / Data Analyst is responsible for turning the data produced by Tayco's manufacturing and business systems into reporting that management and senior management can act on. This position designs, builds, and maintains Power BI reports and data models, writes and tunes the SQL beneath them, and maintains the Crystal Reports used for operational and printed reporting. Working alongside two full stack developers - one on the front end used by the shop floor, one on the back end and administrative side - and a project coordinator, this position complements in-house web and software development with the business intelligence layer that sits above it, and provides reporting, communication, and design support to the project as a whole. This position is based at Tayco's Etobicoke facility.

Posting notice: This posting is for 1 existing vacancy for a 12-month contract position.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards, datasets, and data
  • models for management and senior management, including scheduled refreshes,
  • gateway configuration, and workspace access.
  • Write, review, and tune the SQL beneath all reporting, including queries, views, and
  • stored procedures against the ERP and in-house application databases.
  • Develop and maintain Crystal Reports for operational and printed reporting and support the users who depend on them.
  • Translate requests from management into defined reporting requirements, the definitions, and the level of detail required - and confirm those definitions before building.
  • Apply consistent visual design to reports and dashboards so that the intended audience can read them immediately, including layout, visual hierarchy, and appropriate selection of charts and tables.
  • Administer and maintain reporting infrastructure on Windows Server, including scheduled jobs, permissions, service accounts, file shares, and report distribution.
  • Contribute light front-end work to the in-house web applications alongside the development team, including HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap changes and the embedding of reports and dashboards into application pages.
  • Prepare presentation and communication materials for management and senior management, including slide decks, one-page summaries, and status reporting on the project.
  • Use Git and GitHub for version control of report definitions, SQL, and related code, following the team's branching and review practices.
  • Verify reported figures against source systems and investigate and resolve discrepancies before they reach a decision-maker.
  • Document data sources, report definitions, measures, and reporting processes, and keep that documentation current.
  • Provide training and support to report to consumers throughout the organization.
  • Use AI-assisted tools with sound judgement, reviewing what is generated, selecting which problems to delegate, and remaining accountable for every query, measure, and figure delivered.
  • Perform various analysis and reporting tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Must be able to use Git and GitHub for version control, including branching, pull requests, and code review.
  • Must be able to use AI-assisted tools effectively and with judgement, including reviewing what is generated, knowing which problems to hand over, and being able to explain any query or measure delivered.

  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services or Power BI Report Server, data warehouse or star schema design, advanced Excel data modelling, Python or R for analysis, Azure data services, or manufacturing and ERP data - production, inventory, purchasing, and sales - is considered an asset.
  • Ability to apply sound visual design judgement to reporting, including layout, visual hierarchy, and selection of charts appropriate to the audience.
  • Ability to gather reporting requirements from management, including clarifying definitions and confirming intent before building.
  • Ability to present findings clearly to a non-technical audience, both in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to question a figure that does not look correct, and to trace it back through the reporting to its source.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
