The posting

Role Purpose

The Data Centre Engineer designs, implements and maintains enterprise compute, storage and virtualisation platforms, ensuring that core Data Centre services are secure, resilient, scalable and capable of supporting critical business operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Centre Operations: Assist with racking, stacking and connecting servers, network equipment and storage devices. Coordinate with partners on cabling and hardware installations.
  • Virtualisation Platforms: Manage virtualisation platforms, including troubleshooting, performance monitoring, capacity management and availability.
  • Operational Stability: Monitor system performance and environmental conditions, identify and escalate potential issues, and follow standard operating procedures. Participate in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management, including the on-call rota. Contribute to disaster recovery, resilience and business continuity planning.
  • Storage and Backup Management: Support the deployment, configuration and maintenance of storage solutions.
  • Automation and Projects: Drive the implementation of automation and Infrastructure as Code to streamline operations and improve efficiency. Maintain and troubleshoot existing automation processes, and participate in proofs of concept to evaluate and integrate new technologies.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with fellow engineers and team members, support other departments, and contribute to team meetings, brainstorming sessions and knowledge sharing.
  • Hybrid Cloud Adoption: Support hybrid cloud adoption and integration with existing Data Centre services.

Requirements

Skills and Experience

  • Substantial experience in enterprise Data Centre engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of compute, storage, virtualisation, operating systems and backup technologies.
  • Experience with virtualisation platforms and their associated management ecosystems.
  • Knowledge of storage protocols, data protection, replication and high-availability concepts.
  • Understanding of infrastructure monitoring, capacity management and performance optimisation.
  • Experience with scripting, automation and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and hybrid operating models.
  • Understanding of security baselines, privileged access and infrastructure hardening.
  • Experience supporting critical platforms in a structured operational environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Typically, six to ten years of relevant experience, or demonstrable expertise appropriate to the role.
  • Experience coordinating the work of others or contributing to technical projects is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of platform reliability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
  • Experience participating in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management.
  • Ability to document technical solutions and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, professional development and relevant industry accreditations.
  • A collaborative, improvement-focused and automation-oriented approach to engineering.
