Filtronic is an award-winning technology company designing and manufacturing advanced RF, microwave and mmWave solutions for the Space, Aerospace, Defence and Telecommunications markets. We are looking for a practical and technically minded Engineering Technician to join our engineering team based at the Cambridge Science Park in the beautiful city of Cambridge.

This is a varied, hands-on role supporting RF, electronics and mechanical development, with the opportunity to develop a broad range of technical skills. Working alongside RF, electronics, software and mechanical engineers, you will help turn designs into working prototypes and reliable test setups for telecommunications, space and defence applications.

The role is predominantly laboratory and workshop based and will provide practical engineering support across the development, assembly and testing of high-performance products.

You will support a range of engineering activities, including:

  • Setting up and carrying out RF and electronic measurements.
  • Operating test and measurement equipment including network analysers, signal generators, power meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Connecting laboratory instruments to PCs using Ethernet, USB, GPIB and serial interfaces.
  • Running and making simple changes to Python scripts used for automated testing and data collection.
  • Supporting soldering, PCB rework, prototype fault-finding and component replacement.
  • Manufacturing cables, RF cable assemblies and electrical wiring harnesses.
  • Assembling mechanical parts, enclosures and complete prototype units.
  • Producing simple components, fixtures and test jigs using 3D printing and CNC equipment.
  • Maintaining laboratory tools, equipment and components.
  • Recording test results accurately and maintaining appropriate engineering records.
  • Working with engineers to resolve practical engineering problems and support the progression of designs from prototype through to production.

Requirements

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with practical engineering experience and an interest in working across different technical disciplines. You will ideally have:

  • Practical experience in electronics, RF, manufacturing or a similar engineering environment.
  • Experience using electronic test equipment.
  • Experience with soldering and/or PCB rework.
  • Basic scripting or test-automation experience, preferably using Python or MATLAB.
  • The ability to read basic schematics, wiring diagrams and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with cable or wiring-harness assembly would be beneficial.
  • Experience with 3D printing, CNC machining or CAD would be beneficial.
  • A careful and methodical approach, with good attention to detail.
  • The ability and willingness to develop skills across different areas of engineering.

Why join Filtronic?

At Filtronic, you will work alongside engineers from a range of disciplines and contribute to the development of high-performance RF and electronic products for telecommunications, space and defence applications.

This role provides the opportunity to develop practical experience across RF measurement, electronics, prototype assembly, testing, fault-finding and engineering development, while contributing to products from initial prototype through to production.

If you have practical engineering skills and want to develop your experience in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, we would like to hear from you.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
